About TECHNICAL DEBT

A satirical resource-management game about a household after a company automates away your job. Played through a cheerful imitation of an old family computer, you read the mail, buy groceries, keep promises to Deborah and DJ, sell off what fills the house, and balance cash, credit, storage and family relationships while chasing PALM Points toward a beach getaway. Bankruptcy is part of the loop: the first one is designed to happen, and you keep permanent lessons for the next run. The credits on the itch.io page say OpenAI Codex did the programming, content drafting, automated testing and design assistance under human direction, with OblongOolong credited for design direction, editing, audio editing and final decisions; the art was made with OpenAI image generation, the music with Suno and the sound-effect sources with ElevenLabs. It was made for AI Browser Game Jam 4, where it ranked 3rd overall out of 123 entries and 3rd for AI Usage. Free in the browser, with mouse or touch controls; the page carries a content note.

Content note: The developer's content note says the game contains fictional financial distress, household conflict, food insecurity, bereavement and predatory advertising, and that its satire targets consumer systems and institutions, not family members or marginalized identities. (itch.io)

How it was built

Verified
CodexPrimary

The AI disclosure on the itch.io page says the project was developed with extensive AI assistance and that OpenAI Codex was used for design analysis, programming, testing, balance simulation and content drafting under human direction and review; the credits list Codex for programming, content drafting, automated testing and design assistance. Static artwork came from OpenAI image generation, the music and a spoken sting from Suno, and the sound-effect sources from ElevenLabs, edited by hand by the creator; none of these are tools we track. Whether any code was written by hand is not stated.

Supporting evidence
  • DeveloperJam submission, AI Tools Used: OpenAI Codex (design, programming, testing, balance simulation and content drafting), OpenAI image generation (art), Suno Pro (music and spoken sting), ElevenLabs (source sound effects, edited by hand). — itch.io
  • OfficialJam rules: development must be heavily AI-assisted, with the majority of the game AI-generated; AI may be used for anything. — itch.io (hosted by Focaccai)
Development approach

Codex wrote the code, drafted content and ran automated tests and balance simulations under the direction of a human creator, credited as OblongOolong, who is credited with design direction, editing, audio editing and final decisions. Built as an HTML5 game for AI Browser Game Jam 4 (theme: Charge!).

Verification notes: Tools from two developer sources: the AI disclosure and credits on the itch.io page and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 4 submission page. The jam allows AI for anything and requires the majority of each game to be AI-generated. Placement from the official results page: 3rd overall (score 3.909 from 11 ratings) out of 123 entries, and 3rd for AI Usage; rating ran from 18 Aug to 1 Sep 2026. The submission page says the game was entered 13 days and 2 hours before the 18 Aug deadline, which puts it on 5 Aug 2026; the itch.io page shows no publish date, so no release date is recorded. The credits name one person, OblongOolong, for direction and editing; whether Cult Of Communication is one person or a group is not stated (a developer reply on the jam page uses both “I” and “we”), so team size stays unknown. The game's code was checked for calls to AI services and none were found. itch.io shows no public rating outside the jam.

Development history

  1. Entered in AI Browser Game Jam 4, 13 days before the 18 Aug deadline (per the jam submission page); the jam required the majority of each game to be AI-generated.

  2. Jam rating closes; the game ranks 3rd overall out of 123 entries (score 3.909 from 11 ratings) and 3rd for AI Usage.
