About 1 in 8 Billion

A free, text-driven life simulation that runs in the browser. Each run starts with a random birth: the country is drawn in proportion to real birth (or population) shares, and the life then unfolds year by year using that country's statistics for life expectancy, health, income and schooling, drawn from United Nations, WHO and World Bank data. Between events the player makes choices about education, work and family, but the circumstances of birth are left to chance — which is the point. No account or install is needed. The developer built the first public version with Anthropic's Claude in about four hours and kept improving it after it spread on social media in Japan, Taiwan, Korea and beyond. It is a simulation with game rules layered on top of statistics, not a forecast: event odds are not reproduced one-for-one from the data.

Development approach

Prompt-driven solo development. According to the developer's interview with Korean media (as relayed by Japanese and Taiwanese press), the developer had long thought about how people cannot choose where they are born; on Oct 5, 2026 they started building, shared progress on Threads, and — when followers asked for a link — bought a domain and published the site the same evening.
