About Ashen Crown

Ashen Crown is a single-player roguelite autobattler. You pick a fighter and climb twenty battles to a final boss; the fights play out on their own, so the game is in the build you put together beforehand, from 12 weapons, 24 classes, 53 subspecs and 247 skills. On the game's own site the developer, Quah Jit, says the whole game is one GDScript file of more than 18,000 lines, written almost entirely through conversation with Claude, with the developer directing, playtesting and correcting. All visuals are drawn in code and the sound and music were generated with AI. It is a paid Windows game on Steam.

How it was built

Verified
ClaudePrimary

The developer says the entire game, a single GDScript file of more than 18,000 lines, was written almost entirely through conversation with Claude: the developer described what they wanted, pushed back when it was wrong, playtested and fed the results back in. The site says Claude was good at systems, combat maths and wiring hundreds of skills, and struggled with anything visual, with keeping the bigger picture after long conversations, and with quietly skipping requests. Every sprite and icon is drawn by code. The developer does not say whether the chat app or Claude Code was used.

Development approach

The developer, who says they had no engine experience or art skills, directed Claude through conversation, playtested and audited the results. The whole game lives in one script (battle.gd, about 18,500 lines) covering combat, classes, events, art, audio and UI. There are no imported image files; the developer says everything they authored, logic and sound together, is only about 5 MB. The site says what would have taken months came together in days.

Verification notes: AI use from the developer's site (quahjit.com/ashencrownproject), which links this Steam app, and from the developer-written AI disclosure on the Steam page, which lists that site as the game's website. Release date, US price, platform (Windows) and language from the Steam store API. The engine is not named; Godot is inferred from the GDScript file the developer describes. The site is written in the first person but also says "we", and the Steam page says "we", so team size is left undisclosed. Both pages say the source code is or will be free to download, but no download link was found on the site when checked. The site's pledge of a free art update at 1,000 sales is a plan, not a sales figure.
