About Digital Waste
Digital Waste is a collection of more than 400 small games strung together as one journey through the twenty-first century. You play as Kevin, guided by ChatGPT as a character, through a world where countries, objects, conversations, ideas, emotions, technologies, memories and philosophies each become a game that explores one concept through its mechanics. Some are action games, others puzzles, strategy games, simulations, narratives, rhythm or experimental pieces, and some are broken on purpose. Countries are only one part; the rest covers people, cultures, inventions, literature, politics, science, art and everyday life. In a note on the store page, which it says a human wrote, the developer says one purpose of the project is to test the relationship between AI and humans, that it has two parts (ChatGPT's introduction to the human world, and a conversation between ChatGPT and Kevin about the nature of AI), and that all the in-game text was written and translated by ChatGPT and Codex. The Steam AI disclosure says the game is designed by ChatGPT, implemented by Codex and directed by Kevin Du, and Steam lists ChatGPT and Codex as co-developers. A paid game on Steam for Windows and macOS, released 11 Aug 2026, in English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.

How it was built
Partially verifiedThe developer's Steam AI disclosure, in full: “This game is designed by ChatGPT, implemented by Codex, and directed by Kevin Du.” Steam lists Codex as one of the game's developers, and the store description says all in-game text was written and translated by ChatGPT and Codex. No model version and no code share are given.
Per the same disclosure, the game was designed by ChatGPT, and the store description says ChatGPT and Codex wrote and translated all in-game text; Steam lists ChatGPT as a developer. One store image is labelled as generated by ChatGPT. ChatGPT also appears in the game as the character who guides Kevin. The game's public source code (linked from the developer's itch.io page, MIT licence, last updated 29 Jul 2026) contains no network or AI-service calls, so the guide's lines are pre-written and nothing is generated while you play.
Per the Steam disclosure, ChatGPT designed the game, Codex implemented it and Kevin Du directed it; ChatGPT and Codex also wrote and translated all in-game text. The store note, which says a human wrote it, says the project was meant to test the relationship between AI and humans and was intended as “an interface with no depth or structure”. One store image is labelled as made by Kevin in GIMP.

“This game is designed by ChatGPT, implemented by Codex, and directed by Kevin Du.”Verification notes: The tools come from the developer-written AI disclosure on the game's Steam page (re-read on 4 Nov 2026): “This game is designed by ChatGPT, implemented by Codex, and directed by Kevin Du.” The Steam store API lists the developers as Kevin Du, ChatGPT and Codex, and the publisher as Kevin Du. The store description calls the 400+ games “handcrafted” and also says all in-game text was written and translated by ChatGPT and Codex; it does not say whether ChatGPT, which appears as a guide character, generates anything during play. The developer's itch.io page, which links the Steam page, says the game was made with Godot and links its source code on GitHub under the MIT licence; that repository (last updated 29 Jul 2026, before release) is a Godot 4.6 project with no networking or AI-service code, and its AGENTS.md tells Codex that “ChatGPT acts as a guide and narrator”, so the guide is scripted. We did not run the game. The Simplified Chinese store name is 虚乐色, and the Chinese description ends with a note that it was translated by Google Translate. Release date, price, platforms and the three languages (all with full audio) from the Steam store API; the review count from the store page on 4 Nov 2026. No website is listed; the developer's location is not stated.
