About Wasteworld: The Nuclear Family

Wasteworld: The Nuclear Family is a free text adventure for the browser in which you type commands, in the manner of an old computer terminal. You wake up on an interstate with amnesia and, it turns out, unresolved mommy issues; the sky is green, mutants are abundant and so is kindness, your grandfather loved chicken sandwiches, and your father's favourite used-car salesman hated his guts. You see the world through a broken CRT monitor, and the developer says more will be revealed about why as you play. The idea comes from the dumb terminal, one central computer with several terminals where you typed in prompts to run programs. The developer, potatoseatpeople, says the concept, the characters and their relationships, the storyline, the side quests and the story arcs are their own, that they directed the design and did the testing, and that Claude wrote the code and much of the text; it took months of work. itch.io lists it as interactive fiction, adventure and survival, with side quests, boss battles and hidden features. Free on itch.io; the developer's latest post says part 2 is being worked on.

How it was built

Partially verified
ClaudePrimary

The itch.io page: “This game was made with Claude as my coding and writing partner. The concept, the characters and their demeanors, their relationships and behaviors, the storyline, the side quests, and the story arcs are all mine — I directed the design and did the testing, and Claude wrote the code and much of the text that brings those ideas to life.” No model and no interface (chat app or Claude Code) is named. The itch.io AI disclosure also ticks Graphics; which tool made the graphics is not stated.

Development approach

The developer wrote the concept, characters, storyline, side quests and story arcs, directed the design and tested; Claude wrote the code and much of the text, over months of work from concept to testing and refinement, per the itch.io page. The developer thanks friends and family for early testing and help with character development. The browser build is a single HTML file (observed).

Verification notes: Story, premise and AI use from the developer's itch.io page (status In development although titled v1.0; HTML5; genres Interactive Fiction, Adventure and Survival; tags include Boss battle and Text based; AI disclosure ticks AI Assisted, Code, Graphics and Text) and its only devlog, “Thanks for playing!” (1 Oct 2026, 23:30 UTC), both re-read on 6 Nov 2026. itch.io shows no publication date; the devlog says the game is out and that part 2 is in progress. The page names the developer's family and friends as early testers; we do not reproduce their names. The developer says the creative work is theirs and the testing was done with friends and family, but does not state a team size, so none is recorded. The single-file browser build was checked for calls to AI services and none were found. itch.io shows no rating and no download count. Location is not stated. We did not play the game.

Development history

  1. In a “Thanks for playing!” devlog the developer asks for feedback and says part 2 is being worked on.
