About Wheelchair Gymkhana Prototype

A free browser time-attack prototype about the feel of a sports wheelchair. Each wheel has its own keys: tap F or J to push the left or right wheel forward, D or K to push it back, and hold a key to brake that wheel, so going straight means matching both sides and pivot turns come from pushing the wheels in opposite directions. You pass four checkpoints in order through a slalom, and hitting a cone adds a time penalty. Version 0.1.7 has five courses, a five-step tutorial, first- and third-person cameras facing forward or back, a seated rider model, music and sound effects, local best times and an online leaderboard for one course, with course names and descriptions in English and Japanese. It is designed for keyboard play in a desktop browser. The developer, who says they were new to game development, wrote on Qiita that the idea came from trying a sports wheelchair at a wheelchair basketball tournament, and that the first version, in which a box stood in for the wheelchair, was built entirely by vibe coding in a day: ChatGPT wrote a design document and GitHub Copilot implemented it step by step in Godot.

How it was built

Partially verified

The developer's Qiita post lists GitHub Copilot as the AI coding assistant, used in Visual Studio Code with Godot 4 and GDScript, and says the game was made entirely by vibe coding: ChatGPT was asked to write a design document, and Copilot implemented it one piece at a time. The developer says a beginner got this far and published in one day. The post covers the first version; it does not say how later versions were made.

ChatGPTSecondary

Wrote the design document that Copilot then implemented, per the Qiita post. The developer also says ChatGPT corrected the post's own text.

Development approach

The developer had ChatGPT write a design document and GitHub Copilot implement it piece by piece in Visual Studio Code, in Godot 4 with GDScript, with Git and GitHub for version control; the stated goal was a minimal playable prototype (separate wheel control, start to goal, timing, penalties, playable by others in a browser, a way to receive feedback) to test whether the idea is fun. The first build used a box in place of the wheelchair. Later devlogs on itch.io add a simplified sports wheelchair model, a seated rider made with VRoid Studio, sound effects from Pixabay, music from DOVA-SYNDROME, course-authoring tools and an online leaderboard on Cloudflare Workers and D1, with a separate ranking setup for unityroom builds.

Verification notes: AI use from the Qiita post by ktanemo of 2 Aug 2026 (14:11 UTC) (“作成はすべてバイブコーディングで行いました。ChatGPTに設計書を書かせ、それをCopilotで一つ一つ実装させました。”); its development table names GitHub Copilot as the AI coding assistant. The post links the itch.io page and calls the game the author's own; we link the Qiita account ktanemo and the itch.io account sukabetaa on that basis. The itch.io AI disclosure ticks only Graphics and Text, not Code (see conflicts). The post describes the first version only; versions 0.1.3 to 0.1.7 were posted as itch.io devlogs between 8 and 16 Aug 2026 and do not mention AI. Release date from the itch.io page (2 Aug 2026, 12:14 UTC). Features, controls, courses, languages and credits from the itch.io page for version 0.1.7. The page mentions unityroom builds with unityroom ranking; we did not find a unityroom page, so none is listed. The rider character is made with VRoid Studio and used under its licence and pixiv/VRoid terms, as the page states. The post says the developer works on the game alongside a job, but does not say outright whether anyone else is involved, so team size is not recorded. No ratings are shown on the page. The developer's location is not stated.

Development history

  1. First prototype published on itch.io, with a Qiita post about why it was made.

  2. Version 0.1.7 adds physics cones, chain-link fences and new park scenery; the online leaderboard is configurable per build for itch.io and unityroom.

Each figure measures something different — concurrent players, owners, downloads and sales are never interchangeable and are never added together. Labels show where each number comes from.
