About KENAZ - The Last Torch

KENAZ - The Last Torch is a short turn-based tactics roguelike in pixel art, set in Norse myth. You carry the last torch through ten halls in two worlds, Helheim and the ice of Niflheim, toward Hel's gate. A hall's gate opens only when every dead torch and cold brazier in it is lit, and the light spreads as you go. The torch is the heroine, with no sword and no shield: it sets on fire whatever it strikes, can sweep three foes at once or be thrown to kindle a far corner, and it burns down every turn, its circle of light shrinking until Hel's cold bites. In the dark you only see eyes; graves open, archers aim and shades and frost wights hunt, and two guardians, Nidhöggr and Garmr, wait along the way. Between halls the path forks between rest and Loki's gambles, and after each hall the Norns offer runes, with one of Loki's eight fire runes among them. Loki is the voice of the game and makes an offer at the end, with two endings. A run takes 20 to 25 minutes, with a leaderboard and three retries of a hall per run. It plays with keyboard or mouse, with sound on. The page says KENAZ is a spin-off of the developer's roguelike Nordveigr, reusing its rules engine, tiles and most foes, and that it was built by an AI with the developer as director and playtester: code, design and texts by Claude. Free in the browser on itch.io; it was entered in AI Browser Game Jam 5.

How it was built

Partially verified

The itch.io page says the game was built by an AI with the developer as director and playtester: code, design and texts by Claude (Anthropic); the painted pictures and sprites were made with GPT Image via Scenario and reduced to game pixels by a script, the sound effects and Loki's voice with ElevenLabs, and the music generated in code. The AI Tools Used answer on the jam submission names Claude Code, Scenario.ai and ElevenLabs. Which model was used is not stated. KENAZ reuses the rules engine, tiles and most foes of the developer's earlier roguelike Nordveigr; the page lists the jam-week additions (24 to 31 October) as the whole light system, the torch fighting, new foes, fifteen handcrafted halls, Loki's runes and voice, the story and the endings.

Development approach

A spin-off of the developer's roguelike Nordveigr, reusing its rules engine, tiles and most foes; the jam rules allow continuing an existing project if most of the submission is new. During the jam week (24 to 31 October) the light system, the torch combat, the fuel and cold mechanics, the forks between halls, two new foes, eight fire runes, fifteen handcrafted halls, a second guardian, the leaderboard, Loki's voice, the story and two endings were added, per the page. Claude wrote the code, design and texts, the art was made with GPT Image via Scenario and reduced to pixels by a script, ElevenLabs made the sound effects and Loki's voice, and the music is generated in code. The developer played, judged and steered. The browser build is 24 plain JavaScript files loaded one by one, with no bundler (observed).

Verification notes: Gameplay, controls, the spin-off note and AI use from the developer's itch.io page (published 25 Oct 2026, 11:21 UTC; updated 16:01 UTC the same day; status Released; HTML5; genre Strategy) and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. The page credits the code to Claude (Anthropic) and the jam answer names Claude Code, so the tool is recorded as Claude Code. No share is given, so no AI code share is recorded. Part of the game (rules engine, tiles, most foes) comes from the developer's Nordveigr (itch.io, published 24 Oct 2026, status Prototype), whose page carries itch's AI disclosure tags for code, graphics, sounds and text; Nordveigr's own AI statement was not checked. The setting uses Norse mythology (Hel, Loki, the Norns, Nidhöggr, Garmr), which is public-domain myth, so no IP notice is recorded. The developer is the same as for Grab Your Torches!; the pronoun “her” on the page refers to the in-game torch-bearer, not the developer. The browser build is 24 plain JavaScript files with no bundler, and its text is fixed to English (observed). The game's JavaScript makes no calls to AI services. Submissions closed on 31 Oct 2026 and voting runs until 7 Nov 2026, 04:00 UTC, so no placement is recorded; on 5 Nov the submission page showed 4 jam ratings (observed; not recorded as a metric). itch.io shows no public rating and no download count. The game was not played.
