About Lugaru-Jaguar

A 3D third-person action game for the Atari Jaguar, and a port rather than an original game: a ground-up rewrite for the Jaguar of Lugaru: The Rabbit's Foot, the open-source action game by Wolfire Games in which you play Turner, a rabbit with martial-arts skills. The README says its models, skeletons, animations, mission maps and sounds are converted from Lugaru's open-source data and cut down to fit the console, and the characters are drawn as low-poly Gouraud-shaded models rather than textured ones. There is a 14-mission campaign against raiders, guards, the raider captain Jack and wolf packs, and a Survival mode of three-enemy waves. You run, jump, wall-jump and backflip, crouch to sneak, counter and disarm, throw knives, swords and staffs and pick them up again, and lock on to enemies, while wolves and raiders notice you by sight, noise, wind and the scent of blood. Updates since release added recovery attacks for both sides, boot credits and a reworked menu. The developer, D-Mar The Daytripper (Dmar3000 on itch.io), says it was vibe-ported with Haroldo-Ok's Jaguar Skill for Claude and calls it a first 3D attempt for the Jaguar. A free 6 MB .j64 ROM for a Jaguar with a GameDrive cartridge or a Jaguar emulator; the developer reports it runs on original hardware, with slowdowns to be expected.

How it was built

The itch.io page and README credit the port as “Vibe-Ported by D-Mar The Daytripper” with Haroldo-Ok's Jaguar Skill for Claude, and the page's AI disclosure ticks AI Assisted, Code, Graphics, Sounds and Text; it is also tagged “ai-hands” and “vibe-coding”. The README refers to the developer as “the user” and says its automated checks were run by emulation and static analysis in a cloud sandbox without access to a physical Jaguar. Which Claude product or model was used is not stated.

Supporting evidence
  • DeveloperLaunch devlog: the developer thanks Haroldo-Ok and his Jaguar Skill for Claude “for even making this possible” and calls the game “My first 3D vibe-attempt for the Atari Jaguar”. — Dmar3000 (itch.io devlog)
Development approach

A bare-metal rewrite for the Jaguar's 68000 processor, its Tom graphics processor with blitter and its Jerry sound processor, in 2 MB of memory, from a 6 MB cartridge image. Per the README, the game logic runs on the 68000 in fixed-point maths, Lugaru's models, skeletons, animations, maps and sounds are converted into an asset pack (19 models, two rigs, 30 animations, 14 missions and 33 sounds, about 2.7 MB) and the meshes cut by about 29%, and the 3D is drawn as Gouraud-shaded low-poly polygons at 320×200 rather than texture-mapped. The developer reports that the current build works on original hardware; the README says its automated checks ran in the Virtual Jaguar emulator and that no formal hardware performance benchmark is recorded. Updates on 31 Oct and 2 Nov 2026 added recovery attacks, boot credits that cannot be skipped and a five-row menu.

Verification notes: Port credit, AI disclosure, controls and features come from the itch.io page (published 31 Oct 2026, 11:14 UTC; updated 2 Nov 2026, 04:28 UTC) and the README downloaded from it, and the updates from the devlogs of 31 Oct (23:40 UTC) and 2 Nov 2026. The launch devlog is dated 31 Oct 2026 (10:32 UTC), shortly before the page's publication time. The page says “Skill for Claude” without naming a model, so the tool is recorded as Claude. The README warns that its detailed architecture and feature descriptions were written for earlier builds and may not match every later change. The C language is inferred from the source file names the README cites (for example physics.c); the README also names assembly files for the graphics processor. Original game: the page credits Lugaru: The Rabbit's Foot to Wolfire Games (David Rosen and contributors), and the launch devlog thanks David Rosen for making it open source. The Lugaru repository states its code is under the GPL, version 2 or later, and its game data under Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 or 4.0; the port's page and README state no licence of their own. No source code repository for the port is linked. The page showed no ratings on 4 Nov 2026. The ROM was not run.
