About The Last Beacon
A narrative timing game about a beacon keeper. The kingdom is retiring its beacon chain, and this is its last autumn. When the bell rings from the tower behind you, you feed your fire and let it go at the right moment so the light runs tower to tower across the mountains to the capital; every tower that catches pays you, and at dawn you spend it on better fuel and gear for harder nights of fog, rain, wind and dark towers the light has to jump. Villagers climb your tower with letters for people far away, and you send them as written, soften them or burn them; your torches spell each one out to a drum beat, and your choices show up in the valley below. Ada keeps the tower across the pass and talks to you by lantern; she can't see the valley and only knows what you tell her. Seven nights, one fire. The solo developer, hashcheckdev, says Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code wrote all the game code, the design, the story and every villager's line; the paintings were generated with Codex and the music and sound with ElevenLabs. Free to play in a desktop browser on itch.io; it was entered in AI Browser Game Jam 5.
How it was built
Partially verifiedThe itch.io page credits coding and design to Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic) in Claude Code: all game code (Three.js + Vite), including the rules, the painted multiplane camera, fire, fog, rain and colour grading, the drum game, the sound engine and the save; also the design documents, the story and every villager's letter and line, every art and sound prompt, and an automated play-tester that screenshots the game in Chrome and Firefox and plays it with real key presses. The page says almost everything in the game was made by AI, directed by one human who set the vision, made every taste call and play-tested each step.
- DeveloperAI Browser Game Jam 5 submission, AI Tools Used: “Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic), in Claude Code: all code, game design, story and dialogue, every art and sound prompt, and an automated play-tester.” — itch.io (AI Browser Game Jam 5, hosted by Focaccai)
Made for AI Browser Game Jam 5 with Three.js and Vite, tested with Playwright. Claude wrote the specs and prompts; OpenAI Codex's built-in image generation painted 45 paintings from one style-anchor image, which scripts keyed into game layers, while the fire, glow, embers, fog, rain, stars and moon are drawn live in code. ElevenLabs made four music tracks (Eleven Music) and 36 sound effects (text-to-sound) from Claude-written prompts, generated ahead of time by a script; the code loops and mixes them live. A trailer shot was animated with Kling v3 Pro on fal.ai. The developer handled direction, taste calls and play-testing, and pasted the prompts into Codex.
“Almost everything in the game was made by AI, directed by one human, who set the vision, made every taste call and play-tested each step.”Verification notes: AI use from the “How AI made this” section of the itch.io page and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 4 Nov 2026; the model name Claude Opus 5.5 is quoted as the developer gives it. The 100% AI code share reflects “All game code”; the page's “almost everything” refers to the whole game. Codex is described in the build text only, because the developer credits it with paintings, not code. Team size 1 from “directed by one human”. Publication (30 Oct 2026, 22:15 UTC) from the itch.io page, which lists the genres Interactive Fiction and Rhythm. The ElevenLabs audio is shipped as files generated ahead of time; the game's script loads only local audio files and makes no calls to AI services. Jam voting was still open on 4 Nov 2026, so no placement is recorded; itch.io shows no public rating. The game was not played.
