About Arcana, Gas & Waterworks Inc.

Arcana, Gas & Waterworks Inc. is a comedic puzzle-strategy game in which you are a new, probationary hire at the municipal utility that delivers magical energy, gas and water to every town, tower, dungeon and dragon's lair in the region. On hex-grid maps you lay conduits from sources to consumers across five energy types (Arcana, Fire, Water, Earth and Gas) and build relay stations, splitters, transformers, batteries and filters, while keeping to a budget and handling complaints from pixies, gnomes, dwarves and dungeon lords. Energy types that share a hex, or run through neighbouring hexes, interact, sometimes usefully and often not. The campaign has 19 hand-crafted scenarios across six career tiers, from new employee to Chief of Reclamation, with a story about the company's past unlocked along the way, and procedurally generated freelance operations carry on after it; there are 23 achievements and Steam lists a level editor. The game is framed as a retro desktop with a CRT terminal look and an in-game music player that plays 13 licensed songs by four independent musicians. The store page says all of the game's income will be donated to The Trevor Project. The solo developer, Shawn Rider, writes in the Steam AI disclosure that Claude Code, used in the Nova editor, was used to write the game's Lua source code and to help with building and releasing a game on Steam, while the developer designed the gameplay and every puzzle, wrote all the text, designed the interfaces in Photoshop and Illustrator and recorded the narration audio. A paid game on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux since 1 Oct 2026, with a free demo covering the first six operations.

How it was built

Partially verified

The developer's Steam AI disclosure says the game was made by a single developer using Claude Code in the Nova editor (by Panic) to write the Lua source code and to help navigate building and releasing a game on Steam. It separates what the developer did: designing and refining the gameplay (with input from friends who played it), writing all dialogue, messages and other text, building the sequence of operations and designing each puzzle, designing all interfaces in Photoshop and Illustrator, and recording the narration clips and processing them in Logic Pro. The music is licensed from independent musicians who, the developer says, did not use generative AI. No share of AI-written code and no model is given.

Development approach

One developer, per the Steam disclosure, writing the Lua source code with Claude Code inside the Nova editor while designing the gameplay, puzzles, text and interfaces by hand. The developer says work on the release version ran from January to October 2026 and that most of that time went into refining interfaces and systems and filling in the narrative and assets. A Steam playtest opened in April 2026 and a demo followed in June. The engine is not named.

“Arcana, Gas & Waterworks Inc. was made by a single developer responsibly using Claude Code in my IDE (Nova by Panic) to write Lua source code and help me navigate the process of building and releasing a game on Steam.”
— Shawn Rider, Arcana, Gas & Waterworks Inc. on Steam (store page incl. AI Generated Content Disclosure)

Verification notes: The AI claim rests on the developer-written AI disclosure on the game's Steam page (re-read on 4 Nov 2026), which names Claude Code for writing the Lua source code and lists in detail what the developer made by hand (design, puzzles, all text, interfaces, narration audio); it gives no share. Solo development and the January to October 2026 development period come from the same disclosure. Release date, price, platforms, languages (English, with full audio) and the demo (app 4799600, free, 12 Jun 2026) from the Steam store API on 4 Nov 2026; the demo's six-operation scope from the developer's Pre-Release Updates post of 8 Jul 2026. The review count from the store page on 4 Nov 2026. Steam lists http://agw-game.com as the website; that address did not resolve over plain HTTP on 4 Nov 2026, but https://agw-game.com/ loaded and links the Steam page. The donation pledge to The Trevor Project is the developer's statement on the store page and is not verified. The in-game music player is called "WynnAmp" and the look is described as a VAX/VMS-style CRT terminal; these are styling references, so no IP notice is attached. Lua is the language named by the developer; the engine is not named. No AI content generated during play is described.
