About Bellfoundry: Temper the Night

A small precision game set in a bell foundry, illustrated in a woodcut style. Over one shift you forge five bells: hold Space (or the orange Hold to stoke button) to heat the metal and let go to let it cool, then press Enter or Strike bell while the temperature sits in its target band and the moving pointer is in the green. Each bell allows 20 active seconds and up to 100 accuracy points, and the five finished bells come together in a final chord. There is no death, payment, account or network requirement, and the optional sound, procedurally synthesized bell tones, starts switched off. The developer, estona815, says the original code, game design and English text were produced with OpenAI Codex and the woodcut artwork with OpenAI's built-in image generation, and that the majority of the game is AI-generated. Free in the browser on itch.io, with keyboard or touch controls; it was entered in AI Browser Game Jam 5, reading the theme Torch as a foundry flame that becomes five musical voices.

How it was built

Partially verified
CodexPrimary

The itch.io page says the original code, game design and English text were produced with OpenAI Codex, the woodcut-style foundry artwork with OpenAI's built-in image generation tool, and that the majority of the game is AI-generated, then integrated and tested with AI assistance; it adds that this is not a claim of human-only authorship. The jam submission credits Codex with the original game design, the JavaScript, HTML and CSS code, the English text, integration and testing. The bell sound is procedural WebAudio synthesis written in the game code; no recorded audio or music model was used.

Development approach

Made for AI Browser Game Jam 5 in October 2026. Codex produced the design, the JavaScript, HTML and CSS and the English text, and handled integration and testing; the woodcut artwork came from OpenAI's built-in image generation. The audio is synthesized with WebAudio in the game code. The page says the game uses no third-party art, libraries, fonts, brands or paid services, makes no AI API calls while it runs, and reuses no story, code or assets from the developer's earlier contest projects.

Verification notes: AI use from the “AI use and credits” section of the itch.io page and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 4 Nov 2026. Both say the code was produced with OpenAI Codex; “majority AI-generated” describes the whole game, not the code, so no AI code share is recorded. The image tool made only the artwork and is described in the build text. Publication and last update (both 20 Oct 2026, 04:10 UTC) from the itch.io page, which sets no genre; the genre tags here are our reading of a timing game. The browser build is a few plain JavaScript modules with no calls to AI services, matching the page's statement. The developer's itch.io account lists several other small games; team size is not stated. Jam voting was still open on 4 Nov 2026, so no placement is recorded; itch.io shows no public rating. The game was not played.
