Mature content

Age rating: 18+ (developer); App Store 17+

Simulated gambling throughout (pull tabs and slot machines, later also a roulette table) with fictional money that never pays out, alcohol served at a bar as part of play, and adult themes of debt, pawning, a title loan and financial desperation (Steam content descriptors). The developer rates the game 18+; the App Store gives 17+ for frequent simulated gambling, frequent alcohol references and infrequent mild mature themes. (Steam)

About Break Even: The Grind

Break Even: The Grind is a top-down pixel game about cheap gambling, styled after 1990s games with flat colours, chunky sprites and rain that never stops. You start with $500 and a rented room on one city block. At the LUCKY STUB you buy sheets of pull tabs and peel the windows open one at a time; down the street are five slot machines at MOONBEAM SLOTS, a triple-zero roulette table at the WHEELHOUSE, a bar whose pour bends the odds for a while, a pawn counter and a title-loan window. Meanwhile the calendar keeps moving: rent of $650 on the first, utilities on the fifteenth and groceries every five days, due whether or not you have the money, and handling that is the real game. Only sleeping moves the day forward, and there are several endings depending on what you were still willing to do near the bottom. Nothing is a real wager and nothing pays out; there are no in-app purchases. Every sprite is drawn and every sound synthesised by the game's own code. The developer's Steam AI disclosure says the game was built with an AI coding assistant under the developer's direction and review, including its code, the pixel maps its sprites are drawn from, its synthesised sound and its dialogue and ending text. Free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad since 24 Sep 2026 and on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux since 1 Oct 2026. Rated 18+ by the developer.

How it was built

Partially verified

The developer's Steam AI disclosure says Break Even was built with an AI coding assistant working under the developer's direction and review. That includes the game's code and, with it, the pixel maps the sprites are drawn from, the synthesised sound, the dialogue and ending text, the scripts that draw the store images and drafts of the store page. The game ships no image or audio files of its own; the one bundled file is an open-licence pixel font. No AI runs during play and the game contacts no AI service. The assistant is not named.

Development approach

Per the Steam disclosure, an AI coding assistant built the game under the developer's direction and review, including the code, sprite pixel maps, synthesised audio and text. Everything on screen is drawn and every sound synthesised by the game's own code while it runs; the only bundled asset is an open-licence pixel font (the iOS version also has an app icon and launch screen). The studio site lists Swift, SwiftUI, Kotlin, TypeScript, React, Node.js and PostgreSQL among the tools it uses in general, but does not say which were used for this game.

Verification notes: The AI claim rests on the developer-written AI disclosure on the game's Steam page (re-read on 4 Nov 2026). It names no tool, so the tool is undisclosed.
