About PIP's Halloween Pop-up Shop

PIP's Halloween Pop-up Shop is a cute, free browser game about a little demon who opens a costume shop in a human town. The Demon Queen has promised a date to whoever turns the most humans into devils this Halloween, and across the street the pumpkin-headed Lantern Jack wants that date too. By day you listen to each customer, where what they say, who they bring and small details are clues, and suggest a costume from your drawer by dragging it onto them; when the Magic Mirror glows, the right suggestion hypnotizes the customer, who will turn up on Halloween night in your devil suit. At night you restock from the Underworld Supply Catalog, read Tonight's Omens and visit the Potion Lab or the Little Kitchen, and there are three minigames: Clue Match, Candy Catch and Shoo the Pranksters. Each run brings a different mix from a cast of 60 customers, a Clue Notebook keeps what you have heard, and there are 11 endings and three difficulty levels, the hardest lasting seven days with an extra ending. You can switch between English and Traditional Chinese at any time. The developer, who says they made it so their own kids could play, writes that they directed and play-tested it, that Claude wrote the code and tests and handled the translation, that Codex drew the characters and scenes, and that Google Gemini made the music.

How it was built

Partially verified
ClaudePrimary

In a post on r/WebGames (28 Oct 2026, UTC) the developer writes: “I made the game with AI tools. I directed it and playtested. Claude wrote the code and tests, and also handled the translation.” The post does not say which Claude product or model was used. The itch.io page credits the team with making it “with generative AI tools (code, art, music and text)”.

Supporting evidence
  • Developeritch.io credit: made by PIP's Halloween Pop-up Shop Team with generative AI tools (code, art, music and text); AI disclosure: AI Assisted, Code, Graphics, Sounds, Text. — itch.io
CodexSecondary

Per the same post, Codex drew the characters and scenes and drafted the store-page copy. The post does not credit Codex with any of the code.

GeminiSecondary

Google Gemini generated the music, per the same post. Not a coding tool.

Development approach

Per the developer, they directed the game and play-tested it, Claude wrote the code and the tests and translated the game into Traditional Chinese, Codex drew the characters and scenes and drafted the store text, and Google Gemini made the music. The developer writes that one art mistake, human mouth lines drawn on the beak of the town doctor Dr. Crow in all four of his pictures, got past every automated check and several rounds of AI visual review and was only caught on a screenshot. The itch.io page names the Fredoka font (SIL Open Font License 1.1) and a version 1.0.1 devlog that added a short tutorial.

Verification notes: The claim that Claude wrote the code comes from the developer's post on r/WebGames by u/aaron_tseng (28 Oct 2026, 11:08 UTC), read from the Arctic Shift Reddit archive because reddit.com did not answer our checks; the same post went to r/itchio and r/aigamedev minutes later. The Reddit name differs from the itch.io account AMIEJM and neither page links the other's account, so the tie rests on the post's “Play here” link. Story, modes, endings, languages, controls, tags and the AI disclosure come from the itch.io page (published 28 Oct 2026, 00:00 UTC; updated 30 Oct 2026, 00:03 UTC; checked 4 Nov 2026), which shows no rating. The official Traditional Chinese title PIP 萬聖快閃店 is on the page. The post says “I made” while the page credits a team and a devlog of 30 Oct 2026 announces “our Christmas co-op game”, so the team size is not known. The post says a costume pop-up at a Seattle mall inspired the game; the developer's location is not stated. The page and the post describe no AI used during play; the game's code was not checked. The game was not played.
