About Bara: A Night Market Story

A cozy cooking and time-management game set at a night market stall, made for AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch). You take orders, grill satay and plate dishes with the right toppings and drinks, and keep the stall's torches burning: customers don't like eating in the dark, so happiness drains while the Brightness meter is red. There are two ways to play. One Night (about 10 minutes) is the jam mode: Halloween night from start to finish, with a costume rush once your customers are happy and an ending about passing on the torch. Normal mode is the whole season, eight nights of about five minutes from late summer to Halloween, with weather that can blow torches out or burn through oil faster, coins that carry over to buy upgrades such as a bigger grill or glass lantern shades, and progress saved in the browser. Later updates added a new dish on each night (among them bandung, ais kacang, teh tarik and lok lok), regular customers with their usual orders, crowd rushes and 14 new animal characters; customers greet you in English and in languages you would hear at a night market in Toronto, per the developer. The developer, Red Mint Studio, credits the game design, story, writing and music (made with Suno) to themselves and the programming to Claude Code, with Claude chat as a planning and spec-writing partner. Free in the browser on itch.io, including on phones.

How it was built

Partially verified

The credits on the itch.io page give the programming to Claude Code (Anthropic). Claude in Claude chat is credited separately as a planning and spec-writing partner. The developer, Red Mint Studio, credits the game design, story and all of the writing to themselves, and the music, made with Suno. The jam submission's AI Tools Used answer lists “Claude Code, Suno AI”. The page does not say which model was used or whether any code was written by hand.

Credited on the itch.io page as the planning and spec-writing partner, in Claude chat.

Development approach

Made for AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch). The developer wrote the design, story and text and planned the game with Claude in Claude chat, which helped write the spec; Claude Code did the programming. The game uses Three.js and Vite. The music was made with Suno, the sound effects come from Kenney and Freesound (both CC0) and the ambience is synthesized in code; Mixpanel collects anonymous gameplay data. The developer lists Galaxy Burger, the sushi restaurant in Dave the Diver, Touhou Mystia's Izakaya and Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar as inspirations. Three devlog updates followed the jam release: a gentler first night and phone fixes (19 Oct), the full menu, regulars and crowd rushes (19 Oct), and 14 new characters (1 Nov).

“Claude Code (Anthropic): programming.”

Verification notes: AI use from the credits on the itch.io page and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. The credits are a short role credit (“Claude Code (Anthropic): programming.”) and give no share, so no AI code share is recorded. The itch.io AI disclosure ticks AI Assisted, Code, Graphics and Sounds; the page does not say how the graphics were made. Team size 1 because the credits name Red Mint Studio as “me”; the developer's location is not stated (Toronto is the setting of the in-game market, per the devlog). Modes, weather, upgrades, menu, characters and greetings from the itch.io page and its three devlog posts (19 Oct 2026, 18:08 and 23:21 UTC; 1 Nov 2026, 16:39 UTC). Published 18 Oct 2026 (00:42 UTC); last updated 1 Nov 2026. Suno made the music before release; it is a music file, not AI running during play. The game's code was checked for calls to AI services and none were found; its only tracking is Mixpanel analytics. Jam voting was still open on 5 Nov 2026 (it closes on 7 Nov), so no placement is recorded; the submission page showed 6 jam ratings (jam votes, not recorded as a metric). itch.io shows no public rating. The game was not played.

Development history

  1. Published on itch.io (00:42 UTC) and submitted to AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch).

  2. Two updates: a gentler first night and more room on phones, then version 0.2 with the full menu, regular customers and crowd rushes.

  3. AI Browser Game Jam 5 submissions close; voting was still in progress on 5 Nov 2026.

  4. Version 0.3 adds 14 new characters (owners, employees and customers).
