About Damage Xiangqi

Damage Xiangqi turns xiangqi (Chinese chess) into a battle of hit points. Every piece has HP, Attack and Defense, so a capture becomes a fight: attacks deal randomized damage, the defender may strike back, and a piece is only removed when its HP reaches zero, letting the attacker move onto its point. Each turn you take three actions instead of one (Red's very first turn has one). There is no checkmate; check is only a warning, and you win by bringing the enemy General's HP to zero. The Cannon attacks over exactly one screen piece and leaps onto its target when it lands the killing blow, which the store calls the game's signature move. Traditional rules stay in place: blocked Horse legs and Elephant eyes, the palace, the river and the flying-General ban. Damage variance, counter rates, actions per turn, rule toggles and each piece's stats can all be changed. You can play four levels of CPU or friends online by invite or room code. The store's Chinese and Japanese texts call it the third game from Ichigeki Games after Damage Shogi and Damage Chess. The developer's Steam AI disclosure says Anthropic's Claude was used to write the game code. A paid Windows game on Steam with an official Traditional Chinese interface.

How it was built

The developer's Steam AI disclosure says generative AI (Anthropic Claude) was used during development to write game code, to create the background music (note data transcribed from a public-domain piece, plus procedurally generated music) and to compose the store artwork from in-game assets. It says no content is generated by AI at runtime. It names Claude without a product and does not say how much of the code Claude wrote.

Development approach

Not described beyond the Steam disclosure. Per the store page, online matches use deterministic lockstep sync with reconnection, and the rules and every piece's stats are adjustable in the game.

Verification notes: The AI claim rests on the developer-written AI disclosure on the game's Steam page; no website, devlog or social post by the developer was found. The disclosure says Claude was used to write game code but gives no share, so the game is classed as AI-assisted rather than vibe-coded. The CPU opponents are ordinary game AI; the disclosure says nothing is generated by AI at runtime. Release date, price, platform and languages from the Steam store API; the official titles Damage象棋 (Chinese) and ダメージ象棋 (Japanese) and the “third game after Damage Shogi and Damage Chess” line from the store's Chinese and Japanese texts. Whether the earlier two games also used AI was not checked. Steam showed no user reviews on 3 Nov 2026 (the review API returned nothing), so no review figures are recorded. Team size and location are not stated.
