About Dark Hours

Dark Hours is a short, wordless isometric horror game about a girl and a torch. On Halloween night her parents leave for a party, a storm rolls in, something burning falls into the forest and a tornado tears the roof off the house; she wakes in the ruins in the dark, and something is out there. You keep the fire alive, move through the dark and reach the next light. The Shrike hunts by sound and flinches from flame, and when the torch runs low it comes closer. Running is fast but loud, crouching is quiet, and fire lets you light or refuel the torch and burn dry debris; fire pits are safe. There are five levels: The House, The Yard, The Fields, The Crash Site and The Pyre. It plays with the keyboard and is best with headphones. In the jam submission, the developer, aely, credits Claude Code (Claude Opus) with the code, the level design and playtesting agents, with images, an intro cinematic and 3D characters from other AI tools. Free in the browser on itch.io; it was entered in AI Browser Game Jam 5.

How it was built

Partially verified

The AI Tools Used answer on the jam submission reads “Claude Code (Claude Opus) for code, level design and playtesting agents; ChatGPT image generation (via Codex) for cover and key art; Higgsfield (Seedance video, images) for the intro cinematic and concept art; Tripo for the 3D characters.” The Opus version is not stated. The itch.io page says only that the game was made for AI Jam 5, with itch's “AI Assisted” disclosure tag.

Development approach

Made for AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch) and submitted 8 minutes before the deadline. Claude Code with Claude Opus wrote the code and did level design, and agents in it playtested the game, per the jam answer. The cover and key art were made with ChatGPT image generation through Codex, the intro cinematic and concept art with Higgsfield (Seedance video and images) and the 3D characters with Tripo. The browser build uses three.js (observed). In a jam comment the developer says they ran out of credits trying to perfect the visuals.

Verification notes: Story, levels and controls from the developer's itch.io page (published 31 Oct 2026, 02:51 UTC; updated 2 Nov 2026, 03:33 UTC; status Released; HTML5; genre Survival); AI use from the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page and the developer's reply there, both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. The code attribution comes from the jam answer only (“Claude Code (Claude Opus) for code”); it gives no share, so no AI code share is recorded. The engine is not named on the page; three.js was seen in the browser build (observed). The page has no language field; its text and controls are in English and the game is described as wordless. The game's JavaScript makes no calls to AI services. Submissions closed on 31 Oct 2026 and voting runs until 7 Nov 2026, 04:00 UTC, so no placement is recorded; on 5 Nov the submission page showed 4 jam ratings (observed; not recorded as a metric). itch.io shows no public rating and no download count. The game was not played.
