About Hip To Be Square

A 3D arcade shooter in the browser with a joke premise: long ago everything was square, until the “roundies” came and proclaimed that the world is a sphere. You play Square Dude, and each level's short typewriter cutscene sends you to eliminate every round object, from Spiked Balls to Fire Suns, Lava Balls and mixed waves. You move with WASD, sprint with Shift, jump with Space and hold the left mouse button to fire a pistol with a magazine and reloads, picking an upgrade between levels (an extra heart, more damage, a faster fire rate, quicker reloads, a higher jump, more speed). The closing message after Level 4 says the game was made by andreykr with Three.js and Codex during Vibe Jam 2026 and that “Zero lines of code were written.” It was made for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026, whose rules required at least 90% of each game's code to be written by AI; the official submission lists Codex as the tool, and it finished 263rd of 945 entries. Free in the browser, played with keyboard and mouse.

How it was built

Partially verified
CodexPrimary

In the official Vibe Jam 2026 submission the entrant lists Codex as the tool and answers Yes to the AI-written field. The game's closing message reads: “This game was made by andreykr with the help of Three.js and Codex during vibejam 2026. Zero lines of code were written.” No devlog describes how Codex was used or which model, and the sources do not say who made the 3D levels, music and sounds.

Development approach

Built for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026 on Three.js with Codex named as the tool. The levels are loaded as compressed 3D model files, and the game has its own music and sound-effect files.

Verification notes: Tool (Codex), engine (ThreeJS), genre (Action, Shooter), pitch (“Fight the round. Stay square.”) and the multiplayer (No), mobile (No) and portal (Yes) flags from the entrant's answers in the official Vibe Jam 2026 games data (submitted 29 Apr 2026, 16:42 UTC; final rank 263 of 945 entries, no award), re-read on 5 Nov 2026; rule 3 on the jam page requires at least 90% AI-written code. “Zero lines of code were written” is the developer's own wording; it is not recorded as an AI code share. Story, enemies, controls and upgrades from the game's script on 5 Nov 2026; the game was not played. The script contains data for further levels, but only the closing message after Level 4 is described here. The title is also the name of a 1986 song; the game uses the phrase but no music or lyrics from it were found, so no IP notice is recorded. Developer: the menu credit names “andrey kr.” and links the X handle kryptonlove, the entrant; no full name, location or team size is given. The game's code was checked for calls to AI services and none were found. The jam page's widget counters showed 247 plays and 577 portal transfers for hiptobesquare.diggle.fun on 5 Nov 2026 (observed; plays are sessions, not players or downloads, so neither is recorded as a metric). The release date is not stated; the jam submission is dated 29 Apr 2026.
