A browser typing runner: every correct letter carries the Claude mascot forward, Space jumps over creatures, and a pixel-art wave closes in from behind. The README says Claude Opus 5.5 built it in Claude Code in one session of about 45 minutes.

The runner is the Claude mascot (the developer's first redirection, as given in the README: “make it a runner with the Claude mascot”). The README says it is a fan-made project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic, and that Claude and the Claude mascot are Anthropic's. No source shows a licence or permission from Anthropic; the MIT licence covers the project's code. (GitHub (ethanplusai))

About Outpace

Outpace is a free typing game in the browser in which you type to keep the Claude mascot running ahead of a wave. Every correct letter carries the runner forward and words move on by themselves; Space only jumps, never types, and pressing it again in the air gives a double or triple jump (on a phone you tap the sky). Five kinds of creature come at you whether you are typing or not: beetles to jump over or stomp, moths at head height that you must not jump into, hoppers, Code Stacks that need a double jump and Glitch Giants that need a triple jump, each costing half a heart to a heart and a half. The wave measures your typing speed and keeps pace, pushing harder as you improve, and getting caught costs a heart. Golden words push the wave back, heart words heal, and 25 letters in a row without a mistake raise the score multiplier, up to x8. A new wave every 20 seconds brings harder words and new creatures, and the scenery changes every two waves. A Sprint mode (15, 30 or 60 seconds) is a plain typing test with nothing chasing you. Scores go to a global leaderboard with no accounts: you can attach a GitHub or X username to show your avatar. According to the README, the whole game (design, engine, pixel art, backend, tests, security pass and deployment) was built by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code in one session of about 45 minutes from a single prompt, with two tasks handed to Sonnet 5.5 subagents; the human part was the brief and four redirections from the developer, Ethan. It is a fan-made project that uses Anthropic's Claude mascot. Free on the developer's own site; the MIT-licensed source is on GitHub.

How it was built

Partially verified

The README calls the project a test of Claude Opus 5.5: the whole game (game design, engine, pixel art, backend, tests, security pass and deployment) was built by Opus 5.5 in Claude Code in one session of about 45 minutes, starting from a single prompt. The human part was the brief and four mid-build redirections from the developer: “make it a runner with the Claude mascot”, “make the whole page the landscape”, “the wave can be much better” and “space should jump, and creatures should come at you”. Opus 5.5 orchestrated the work and sent two well-scoped tasks to Sonnet 5.5 subagents: building the backend (server, store, validation and 30 tests, all passing on the first run) and an adversarial security QA pass, whose three confirmed weaknesses were then fixed. The build log gives about 372k tokens of orchestrator context and 129,877 subagent tokens, and says the publish and deploy step came later and is not counted.

Supporting evidence
  • DeveloperBuild log: “one Claude Code session with Claude Opus 5.5 as the orchestrator and Sonnet 5.5 subagents for well-scoped parallel tasks”; about 45 minutes (02:36 to 03:21 UTC, 30 Sep 2026) from the first prompt to a working local game. — GitHub (ethanplusai)
Development approach

Zero npm dependencies: a vanilla JavaScript engine that holds all game rules as pure logic (typing, adaptive wave, jump physics, creatures, health, scoring) and is fully unit-tested, a canvas scene with parallax biomes and a pixel “Great Wave”, and a small Node server whose API also runs as Vercel functions, with scores in Upstash Redis. The leaderboard has no accounts; the server signs single-use run tokens, rate-limits and rejects impossible runs, and the README says it cannot prove that a plausible score was really played. The build log lists 47 passing tests, 38 screenshots taken during visual QA with Playwright, balance simulations with typing-and-jumping bots from 25 to 130 words per minute, and a brute-force search over jump timings that led to retuning the Code Stack and Glitch Giant until each creature had a timing window of about 400 to 650 ms.

Verification notes: Gameplay, credits and AI use come from the README and docs/BUILD_LOG.md, read through raw.githubusercontent.com on 4 Nov 2026; the MIT licence is from the LICENSE file (© 2026 Ethan, github.com/ethanplusai). github.com and the GitHub API were not used, so stars and commit dates are unchecked. The build log dates the build to 30 Sep 2026 but says deployment came later, so no release date is recorded. The hosted game loaded on 4 Nov 2026 (page language en); its scripts were checked for calls to AI services and none were found. The leaderboard backend only stores scores and a coarse device label; it is not an AI feature. The developer's X post was not opened. Team size is not stated; the README names no human other than Ethan. The game uses Anthropic's Claude mascot; see the IP notice. The game was not played.

Development history
