About IdleWorlds

A free, text-based idle MMORPG that runs in the browser on a computer or phone. You train ten skills (mining, smithing, alchemy, tailoring, combat and more), craft your own gear and fight through 34 zones, and your character keeps working while you are away. Prices on the market are set by players, guilds of up to 20 take on 8-player raids and server-wide world bosses, and you can start as a guest with no sign-up. The developer says they spent 18 years making music, are not a trained software engineer, and built the game alone in about two months using AI throughout. It was entered in the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026, whose rules required at least 90% of the code to be written by AI; the entrant, matduke, lists Codex as the tool. The patch notes show near-daily updates since April 2026 and optional paid extras.

How it was built

Partially verified
CodexPrimary

In the official Vibe Jam 2026 submission the entrant lists Codex as the tool and answers Yes to the AI-written field. In a dev diary the developer says they used AI throughout development, are not a trained software engineer, and that AI let them build systems they could design but would have struggled to build alone; the diary does not name the tool. The submission covers the jam version; the AI share of later updates is not stated.

Supporting evidence
  • OfficialJam rule 3: at least 90% of the code has to be written by AI. — Vibe Jam (Pieter Levels)
  • DeveloperDev diary (29 May 2026): “I used AI throughout the development process”; one developer, about two months to a playable state. No tool named. — IdleWorlds blog
Development approach

One developer with a music-production background, using AI throughout to implement the systems they designed, while keeping the design decisions their own (per the dev diary). The developer describes fixing bugs within hours and adding features players asked for the night before; the patch notes list updates almost every day.

Verification notes: Tool (Codex), genre and multiplayer flag from the entrant's answers in the official Vibe Jam 2026 games data (submitted 24 Apr 2026; final rank 122, no award); rule 3 on the jam page requires at least 90% AI-written code. The developer's dev diary confirms heavy AI use but does not name the tool, so Codex rests on the jam submission alone. The diary's author is shown as IdleWorlds; the developer is identified by the handle matduke (also djmatduke), which the patch notes give for the game's admin and owner. The “AI raiders” and test “clones” in the patch notes are scripted raid bots, not generative AI; no calls to AI services were found in the client code (the only OpenAI references are an advertising pixel noted in the patch notes). Game features from the home page; the earliest patch note shown is version 0.1.9 on 6 Apr 2026, but the launch date itself is not stated. The jam page's widget counter showed 3,422 plays for idleworlds.com on 3 Nov 2026 (observed; sessions, not players or downloads, so not recorded as a metric).

  4. Still updated almost daily (version 0.2.0+2026-11-03.210); recent patches add guild buildings funded by member donations.
