About Last Ember
A short, tense maze game about passing a torch. For generations one flame has been carried through the warren, and your family must bring it to the surface. No torch lasts long enough, so before yours burns out you pass it on: the next explorer carries on from where you stood, and that spot stays lit for good. Let the flame die in the dark and the next explorer has to start again from the last light, with one fewer of the family left; each family has three explorers, each with their own words as the torch passes. Oil glints through walls and refills your torch, Shades flee a strong light but hunt a dying one, your torch does not burn while you stand in a brazier's light, and the fallen keep their oil. Every maze is new, and a Daily maze is the same for everyone; a Chronicle records each run, five heirlooms unlock along the way and an end screen maps every explorer's path. A run takes about five minutes. The developer, NEEDaFIX, says the idea, the design decisions and the playtesting were the developer's own and Claude (Anthropic) wrote all of the code, first as a single HTML file and then in the Godot engine, working inside the editor through the Godot AI addon. The page calls it a side story to the developer's larger game, Torchwarren. Free in the browser on itch.io, on PC and on phones turned sideways; it was entered in AI Browser Game Jam 5.
How it was built
Partially verifiedThe itch.io page's “How I made this with AI” section says the developer built the game entirely by talking with Claude (Anthropic): the idea, the design decisions and the playtesting were the developer's, and Claude wrote all of the code. There are no image or sound files; the graphics, lighting, particles and every sound are generated by code while the game runs. After about 15 rounds of playing and changing a single-HTML-file version, the game moved to Godot 4.7, where the Godot AI addon let Claude work inside the editor: it rebuilt every mechanic, ran the game, took screenshots and fixed what it saw. The page lists the tools as “Claude (code and design), Godot 4.7 with the Godot AI addon”. No model is named.
- DeveloperAI Browser Game Jam 5 submission, AI Tools Used: “Claude (Anthropic) wrote all of the code and helped with design and text. The graphics, lighting and sounds are all generated by that code while the game runs (no image or sound files).” — itch.io (AI Browser Game Jam 5, hosted by Focaccai)
Built first as a single HTML file, then moved to Godot 4.7, per the itch.io page. Claude wrote all of the code and, through the Godot AI addon, worked inside the Godot editor to rebuild the mechanics, run the game, take screenshots and fix what it saw; Godot's 2D lighting gives the wall shadows. There are no image or sound files: graphics, lighting, particles and sound are generated by code at runtime. The developer reports about 15 rounds of play-and-change, with feedback from a tester in the KilnGuild Discord, then phone testing that added a floating joystick, a large "Pass the torch" button, a zoomed-in phone view and corner assist.

“The idea, the design decisions and the playtesting were mine; Claude wrote all of the code.”Verification notes: AI use from the “How I made this with AI” section of the itch.io page and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. Both say Claude wrote all of the code; no share or model is given, so no AI code share is recorded. The itch.io AI disclosure ticks Code, Graphics, Sounds and Text. The developer is recorded as solo from the first-person page and profile (“I bring the ideas, the design and lots of playtesting, and Claude writes the code”); team size is not otherwise stated. Engine (Godot 4.7, “Made with Godot”), publication (28 Oct 2026, 21:10 UTC), run length and controls from the itch.io page; the Godot package in the browser build contains GDScript files (observed) and makes no calls to AI services; it also packages the editor-side Godot AI addon (res://addons/godot_ai, observed), an editor plugin that the game's own scripts do not use. Torchwarren, the developer's larger game linked from the page, was not checked and is not in the database. Several AI Browser Game Jam 5 entries share the title Last Ember; this record is the one by NEEDaFIX. Jam voting was still open on 5 Nov 2026, so no placement is recorded; itch.io shows no public rating. The game was not played.
