About Starfall Melee

A 2D space-combat duel in the browser in which two ships fight to the death on one screen. Each side picks a ship from 16 races with names such as Asterion Patrol, Mycoid Brood and Null Choir, each with a primary and a secondary weapon, then thrusts, turns, brakes and fires until one ship is destroyed, and a melee goes on fight after fight until one player is champion. Two people can share one keyboard, or player 2 can be switched to a computer opponent that picks its own ships. The entrant pitches it as an homage to Star Control 2's Melee mode and gives as the inspiration Codex's ability to generate images internally, which saved a lot of time. It was made for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026, whose rules required at least 90% of each game's code to be written by AI; the official submission lists Codex as the tool. It finished 638th of 945 entries. Free, for desktop browsers.

How it was built

Partially verified
CodexPrimary

In the official Vibe Jam 2026 submission the entrant lists Codex as the tool and answers Yes to the AI-written field, and gives as the inspiration “Codex's ability to generate images internally. Saved a ton of time.” Which images were generated, and which model ran Codex, is not stated. The game does not mention AI, and the submission covers the jam version only.

Supporting evidence
Development approach

Built for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026 with Codex and, per the submission, no game engine: a plain JavaScript file drawing to a 2D canvas, with ship images loaded as PNG files. The entrant points to Codex's built-in image generation as the inspiration. The game talks to no server.

“2 spaceships fight it out to the death, an homage to Star Control 2's Melee mode.”

Verification notes: Tool (Codex), engine (“No engine”), genre (“Action, Shooter”), pitch, inspiration and the multiplayer (No), mobile (No) and portal (Yes) flags from the entrant's answers in the official Vibe Jam 2026 games data (submitted 30 Apr 2026, 15:28 UTC; final rank 638 of 945 entries, no award); rule 3 on the jam page requires at least 90% AI-written code. Both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. Title: the jam entry is “Starfall”, the live page is titled “Starfall Melee”; the page title is used. Developer: the page credits @kashprime, the handle in the jam data; that X profile is Kashif Pirzada, MD (an emergency physician, assistant professor and startup founder, location Toronto); team size is not stated. Ship races, controls, the computer opponent and the melee flow come from the page and its script; the computer opponent is scripted, not an AI model, and the page makes no network calls apart from the jam widget (no calls to AI services, checked 5 Nov 2026). Star Control 2 is named only as the inspiration for the format; the 16 races have original names and no Star Control names or assets were found, so no IP notice is attached. The jam page's widget counter showed 65 plays for sfmelee.pages.dev on 5 Nov 2026 (observed; sessions, not players or downloads, so not recorded as a metric). The release date is not stated; the jam submission is dated 30 Apr 2026.
