About The Last Light
A third-person 3D survival-horror game in the browser. You are the Torchbearer, alone in forgotten catacombs with a single fragile torch, recovering relics from the crypts and carrying them back to a golden sanctuary fire; deeper rooms hold richer finds but burn fuel faster. There is no combat: you survive with light, stealth and navigation. When the torch goes out you get eight seconds of grace, then the Hunter starts searching, seeing, listening and following real paths, and you must hide, break line of sight and strike a match to relight. The torch has three flame modes (Ember, Steady and Blaze) that trade light against fuel, and you carry matches, chalk, throwable stones to lure enemies, burning brands and a flame burst. Each expedition is seeded, with 12 to 18 chambers, branches and loops; relics you bank and upgrades you buy persist, while relics you are carrying when you die are lost. It plays with keyboard and mouse, an Xbox controller or touch on iPhone, and needs WebGL2. The developer, Hallucinated Games, wrote the brief, directed the art and reviewed the work; an AI coding agent, OpenAI Codex, wrote the TypeScript and Three.js code, the world generation and more than 160 automated tests, and the 3D models, animation, music and sound effects were also made with AI tools. The repository documents the prompts and per-asset provenance. Made for AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch), it is free in the browser on itch.io and listed as in development.
How it was built
Partially verifiedThe itch.io page says the code (TypeScript, Three.js and Vite) was written by an AI coding agent, OpenAI Codex, from the design brief, with a deterministic 60 Hz simulation, seeded world generation and more than 160 automated tests. The game was built by directing AI agents through a specify, implement, generate assets, integrate, test, play and revise loop: the human role was the brief, the art direction and the review, and the AI did the implementation, asset generation and testing. A critic agent playtested full expeditions with normal controls and wrote an unaltered report that the fixes respond to. 3D models were made from SDXL reference images (ComfyUI) with TRELLIS image-to-3D and finished in Blender; animation came from HY-Motion and Mesh2Motion, music from ACE-Step-v1-3.5B and sound effects from MOSS-SoundEffect-v2.0. Which model ran Codex is not stated.
- DeveloperJam submission, AI Tools Used: “AI coding agent (OpenAI Codex) built the TypeScript/Three.js game, world generation and tests from a written design brief.” — itch.io (AI Browser Game Jam 5, hosted by Focaccai)
- DeveloperRepository README: documents prompts, generated-asset provenance, rejected experiments, tests and browser checks; the shipped game runs on static hosting “without inference services, API keys or a backend”. — GitHub
- OfficialJam rules: development must be heavily AI-assisted, with the majority of the game AI-generated; AI may be used for anything. — itch.io (Focaccai)
Built by directing AI agents from a written game specification in a loop of specifying, implementing, generating assets, integrating, testing, playing and revising. Codex wrote the TypeScript, Three.js and Vite code with a deterministic 60 Hz simulation, seeded world generation and over 160 tests; 100 seeded escape scenarios run on every balance change, and a critic agent's playtest report drove fixes. The 38 3D models are neural reconstructions (SDXL reference images turned into GLB models with TRELLIS, finished in Blender). The public repository's README logs each update pass, such as a first-run tutorial and camera rework dated 1 Nov 2026, and links per-asset provenance records.

“The human role was the brief, the art direction and the review; the AI did the implementation, asset generation and testing.”Verification notes: Mechanics, controls, tips, credits and AI usage from the developer's itch.io page (published 22 Oct 2026, 01:33 UTC; status In development; HTML5; genre Survival) and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 4 Nov 2026; the repository README was read through raw.githubusercontent.com on the same day. The repository is linked from both developer pages. We could not open the GitHub web page or API from our environment, so stars and repository dates were not checked; no LICENSE file was found at the repository root, so the code is not recorded as open source. The developer is credited as Hallucinated Games (“Design and direction”); the repository belongs to the GitHub account corycowgill, and we have not confirmed a real name or team size. The slug adds “torchbearer” to tell this game apart from other games called The Last Light. The jam allows AI for anything and requires the majority of each game to be AI-generated; voting was still in progress on 4 Nov 2026 (it ends on 7 Nov), so no placement is recorded; the submission page showed 5 jam ratings (observed; not recorded as a metric). The web build was checked for calls to AI services and none were found. itch.io shows no public rating and no download counts. We did not play the game.
Development history
A critic agent plays two ordinary expeditions and writes an unaltered report; the team's response and a gameplay review pass follow, per the README.
DeveloperGitHubPublished on itch.io (01:33 UTC) and submitted to AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch), about nine days before the deadline.
AI Browser Game Jam 5 submissions close; the jam requires heavily AI-assisted games playable free in the browser. Voting was still in progress on 4 Nov 2026.
Officialitch.io (Focaccai)A first-time-player pass, answering playtest feedback, adds an early taste of the Hunt, a clearer opening brief and a reworked camera, per the README.
