Chinese chess turned into a roguelike: drop pieces anywhere on the board, upgrade them and fight across maps of monster pieces and terrain. The developer says Gemini, later Codex, wrote it without a line of hand-written code.

About 象棋大乱斗

象棋大乱斗 (“xiangqi free-for-all”) is a free browser game that builds a roguelike on Chinese chess (xiangqi). It started from one idea the developer had on the way home from work: what if pieces could be placed on any point of the board to fight? That first prototype survives as the practice mode on the home page, in which the two sides take turns placing or moving pieces and the first to eliminate the other wins, against a computer opponent that uses a simple minimax search. The main mode grew out of it. You recruit a team and a commander, upgrade your pieces (the first design gave each piece type three upgrades, such as a chariot that ignores pieces in its way) and move across a map of stages with shops, monster pieces and terrain; a mechanic called 天火 (heavenly fire) was added because captures force trades in xiangqi and long-range pieces such as chariots and cannons dominate larger boards. The developer, sunhz, posted it on V2EX in March 2026 after more than a month of on-and-off work in spare time, saying Gemini vibe-coded the prototype and then made every design revision, with Codex taking over later, and that not a single line of code was written by hand along the way. The developer also wrote that the patch-by-patch design had reached a deadlock. In Simplified Chinese; it can be installed as a web app.

How it was built

GeminiPrimary

In a V2EX post (2 Mar 2026) the developer says Gemini vibe-coded the prototype in spare time (“于是业余时间让 gemini vibe 了一个原型”), including the computer opponent's simple minimax algorithm, and then revised the game after each design pass: “设计完一版就让 Gemini 改一版(后来用 Codex ),说实话全程没有写过一行代码” (after each design pass I had Gemini revise it, later Codex; honestly, I never wrote a line of code the whole way). The post does not say which Gemini product or model was used.

CodexSecondary

Took over from Gemini for later revisions, per the same post (“后来用 Codex”).

Development approach

A prototype vibe-coded with Gemini, then iterated design by design for more than a month, with Gemini and later Codex making each revision. The live page is a React app built with Vite (observed); its import map still lists Google's genai library, but the game's code does not use it.

Verification notes: AI use, the design history and the developer's assessment come from the developer's V2EX post in the 分享创造 section (2 Mar 2026, 13:37 UTC+8), re-read on 6 Nov 2026; it links the play address. The page title and web manifest name the game 象棋大乱斗; the address uses chess-brawl, which we do not treat as an official English title. The romanised title is ours. The live page's import map lists React and @google/genai (the setup of a Google AI Studio app), but the 657 KB game script, fetched on 6 Nov 2026, contains no reference to it and makes no network calls besides loading its own files, so no AI model is called during play; the computer opponent is a minimax search, per the developer. The developer mentions finding two Steam games built on chess and xiangqi (Gambonanza and 弈棋·三国志) during development and taking ideas from them; that is the developer's account, and we found no names or assets from them in the game. Replies in the thread from players report bugs and balance problems. The game was not played. No release date is given; the post is the earliest dated source. No name, location or team size is given.

Development history

  1. The developer posts the roguelike xiangqi game on V2EX with a play link, after more than a month of on-and-off work.
