About Dragonwake

A traditional turn-based roguelike set in Valoria, a land once ruled by the old empire of Istaris before the Starfall. Your heirloom, a blackglass star amulet, draws you there just as a primordial dragon begins to stir, and the road leads toward the Sundering Scar. You choose a race (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Half-Elf, Halfling, Gnome or Half-Orc) and a class such as Fighter, Ranger, Paladin, Rogue, Cleric or Wizard, then travel a large world map of roads, towns, ruins, towers and dungeons; every action is a turn, with 8-way movement, traps, hunger, spells, shops and hundreds of items and monsters. The Steam page says the rules aim for a 1e/2e-era tabletop feel, and the game can be played with sprite graphics or classic ASCII. It was made for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026, whose rules required at least 90% of each game's code to be written by AI; the official submission lists Codex with GPT 5.4 xhigh, and the entrant says the aim was long, complex replayability with AI coding. It finished 106th of 945 entries. The browser build is free on desktop; a paid Steam version for Windows (US$7.99, with a demo) came out on 1 May 2026, and its AI disclosure says all graphical assets are AI-generated.

How it was built

Partially verified
CodexPrimary

In the official Vibe Jam 2026 submission the entrant lists the tool as “Codex, GPT 5.4 xhigh” and answers Yes to the AI-written field; the inspiration answer says the project was an attempt to achieve long, complex replayability with AI coding. The Steam AI disclosure covers art only: all graphical assets are AI-generated. No devlog describes how Codex was used, and the submission covers the jam version only; how much of the Steam version's code was written by AI is not stated.

Development approach

Built for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026 in C++ (the engine answer in the jam data), with Codex and GPT 5.4 xhigh named as the tools; the browser build is compiled to WebAssembly with Emscripten. Per the Steam AI disclosure, all graphical assets are AI-generated. The game was released on Steam the day the jam closed, with more languages than the browser build.

Verification notes: Tool (“Codex, GPT 5.4 xhigh”), engine answer (C++), genre, pitch, inspiration and the multiplayer (No), mobile (No) and portal (Yes) flags from the entrant's answers in the official Vibe Jam 2026 games data (submitted 10 Apr 2026, 15:35 UTC; final rank 106 of 945 entries, no award), re-read on 4 Nov 2026; rule 3 on the jam page requires at least 90% AI-written code. Setting, races, classes and systems from the browser build's page and the Steam description. Developer: the jam handle kalin_t is linked from kalin.games, whose Dragonwake page links the Steam app; Steam credits Mr Crops as developer and publisher, as it does for Ashigaru Tactics, which kalin.games also lists. The X profile could not be read. Price, platform, release date (1 May 2026), languages and the demo from the Steam store API; the review count and the AI disclosure from the store page on 4 Nov 2026. The browser build is English; the Steam version lists 12 languages. That the Steam version continues the jam codebase is assumed from the shared name, setting and links, not stated. kalin.games also lists an Android version; no Android link was opened. The Steam page calls the game D&D-inspired and says its rules aim for a 1e/2e-era feel; the race and class names are generic fantasy terms and no Dungeons & Dragons names or assets were found, so no IP notice is attached. The browser build's loader and WebAssembly file were checked: they contain Discord webhook addresses whose purpose is not stated, and no calls to AI services. The jam page's widget counters showed 1,549 plays and 3,799 portal transfers for the host kalineh.github.io on 4 Nov 2026 (observed; counted per host, so other pages on that host may be included; sessions, not players or downloads, so not recorded as metrics). The browser build's release date is not stated; the jam submission is dated 10 Apr 2026.
