About Surviving Day!

Surviving Day! is a voxel survival and building game that starts from the familiar loop of gathering, crafting and getting through the first night, then adds a lot on top. Skills such as Combat, Magic, Mining, Forging and Chemistry level up separately through use, and gear slots include wings. The generated world has magic forests, volcanic regions, floating skylands, tundra, jungles with velociraptors, coral reefs and deep caves, with structures such as catacombs, shipwrecks and a Dragon Citadel tied to a quest chain; players can tune how often each structure appears before creating a world. NPC colonies grow, choose leaders, trade and go to war, villagers pursue their own goals, and more than 40 animal species have their own behaviour and biomes. A circuitry system extends to programmable computers, camera networks and automated production, and a creative mode saves builds as blueprints. The game can be hosted as a server with permissions and roles, and mods are compiled libraries that hook into the game. The developer's Steam AI disclosure says Claude Code wrote the game's code. A paid game on Steam for Windows and Linux; an earlier free build remains on itch.io.

How it was built

Partially verified

The developer's Steam AI disclosure says, in full, that they used Claude Code (written “claude.code”) to write the code for the game. The itch.io page's AI disclosure is ticked “AI Assisted”, with Code and Graphics selected, so some of the graphics were also made with AI help; the tool for those is not named. Neither source says how much of the code AI wrote or how the developer worked with it.

Development approach

Developed in public on itch.io from at least November 2025, with devlogs for a C# version (Nov 2025), shaders, NPCs and multiplayer syncing, then a Steam demo in March 2026 and the full Steam release in July. The store page says the game is a year into development and promises three more years of free updates. Modding uses a C-ABI interface: mods are compiled shared libraries that hook into blocks, NPC events, weather, crafting and chat.

“I used claude.code to write the code for the game.”
— JJustis, Surviving Day! on Steam

Verification notes: The AI claim comes from the developer-written AI disclosure on the game's Steam page (Claude Code wrote the code) and is backed by the AI disclosure on the developer's itch.io page (AI assisted, code and graphics) and by the Steam demo's own disclosure, which says the game is “coded by ai” while the developer does “the prompting all day long”. Steam lists secupgrade.com/survivingday as the game's website, and that site links the Steam page; the itch.io page links the same site. Release date, price, platforms and language from the Steam store API; the Steam demo (7 Mar 2026) and a separate Playtest app (14 Oct 2026) from their own store entries. Steam showed no user reviews on 3 Nov 2026 (the review API returned nothing), so no review figures are recorded. The colony and villager behaviour described on the store page is scripted simulation; no source mentions generative AI running during play. One image in the store description has a file name beginning “chatgpt_image”; this is not counted as evidence of anything. A gamedev.net post said to quote the developer on learning C# with Claude Code could not be opened and is not used. Team size and location are not stated.

Development history

  1. The developer posts a GPU-accelerated C# version on itch.io and says the game will come to Steam as a demo.

  2. A free demo is released on Steam; the itch.io devlog of the same day describes the game as built on the Godot engine.

  3. A polished demo build with expanded multiplayer and modding is posted on itch.io.

  4. Released on Steam for Windows and Linux.

  5. A separate Surviving Day! Playtest app appears on Steam.

Where sources disagree
Engine
The itch.io page lists the game as made with Godot and a March 2026 devlog says it is built on Godot, but the November 2025 devlog is titled “C# Release”, and the Steam page and the developer's forum describe compiled C-ABI / C++ mods and ask for the player's OpenGL version. It is not confirmed which engine the Steam version uses. (itch.io, itch.io (JJustis), itch.io (JJustis), Steam, Secupgrade.com)
