The README calls the game a remake of Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty (Westwood, 1992) and says its mechanics, numbers and rules were ported from the source code of the open-source Dune Legacy engine, so the code is GPL-2.0-or-later; maps and scenarios are CC-BY-SA 3.0. It uses the Dune names, Houses, units and story beats. The README says Dune is a trademark of its respective owners and that this is a non-commercial fan project using none of the original Westwood assets; models are procedural and voices AI-generated. No source shows a licence from the rights holders. (GitHub)

About Dune: The Battle for Arrakis

Dune: The Battle for Arrakis is a free real-time strategy game for desktop browsers that its README describes as a remake of Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty (Westwood, 1992) in three.js. Its mechanics, numbers and rules were ported from the source code of Dune Legacy, an open-source engine for Dune II, and the graphics were rebuilt in 3D. There are campaigns for the three Great Houses, Atreides, Harkonnen and Ordos, with nine levels each, mentat briefings and a region map of Arrakis, plus bonus campaigns from the OpenSD2 scenarios; skirmish against the AI for up to six players on 50 Dune Legacy maps or a random one; every Dune II unit and structure, sandworms, spice blooms, friendly fire and the CHOAM starport; saving and loading; and a mentat encyclopedia. The developer says Claude Code (Opus 5.5) built the game in one session of 1 hour 51 minutes, writing about 16,000 lines across 57 files without the developer stepping in, and that a second 44-minute session with Sonnet 5.5 rebuilt all the 3D models, which are procedural. Voice-over and sound effects were generated with ElevenLabs; the README gives prompts for music made with Suno, and the game plays a generated ambient score when no music files are present. The README calls it a non-commercial fan project that uses none of the original Westwood assets. Free in a desktop browser with WebGL 2; the code is GPL-2.0-or-later.

How it was built

Partially verified

In a post on r/threejs (7 Oct 2026, UTC) the developer writes: “So I pointed Claude Code at the Dune Legacy source and let it work.” Session 1, on Opus 5.5, took 1 hour 51 minutes and produced about 16,000 lines across 57 files: it cloned Dune Legacy, spawned three research sub-agents (units and combat; structures, economy and AI; campaign and story), wrote research documents and then built the engine; the developer says: “I didn't step in once until it was done.” Session 2, on Sonnet 5.5, took 44 minutes and rewrote all the 3D models (19 units, 21 structures) with designs for each House, building itself a model viewer to check them. The developer lists four mistakes in session 1 that it had to debug, and says it first wrote the interface strings in Russian and later added English. Speech and sound effects were generated with ElevenLabs by scripts in the repository.

Development approach

Built by Claude Code from the Dune Legacy source in two sessions, without the developer stepping in, per the developer. three.js and Vite; the simulation ticks every 16 ms with unit data converted from Dune Legacy's ObjectData.ini, and the repository includes headless campaign and mechanics tests. Models are procedural (primitives and canvas textures); voice and sound effects are generated with ElevenLabs, and music is optional files made with Suno, with a generated ambient score as the fallback. GitHub Actions deploys the build to GitHub Pages.

Verification notes: AI use, session times, line count and the bug list come from the developer's post on r/threejs by u/One_Turnover9394 (7 Oct 2026, 07:54 UTC), read from the Arctic Shift Reddit archive on 6 Nov 2026; the post links the demo and the repository. Features, mechanics, controls, the licence and the fan-project statement come from the README, read through raw.githubusercontent.com on 6 Nov 2026; the LICENSE file is GPL version 2. The README's “Built with AI” cards link to coders.talk, a service for sharing coding-agent sessions; whether the developer is connected to it is not known. The Reddit account and the GitHub account crocone are tied only through the post's links. The live build's script contacts no AI services; the game falls back to browser speech synthesis for missing voice lines (checked 6 Nov 2026). The post says the interface was first written in Russian; the live build shows English only. “16k lines” is the developer's own figure. Stars and commit history were not checked (github.com was not reachable from our checker). The game was not played.
