About FIRESTARTER - LET IT BURN

A first-person flamethrower arcade game that runs in the browser, on desktop and on phones. You get one flamethrower, one city and one run of 10 to 15 minutes. Light a building and the fire jumps to its neighbours, floor by floor; every block that catches from spreading fire, embers, explosions or falling debris adds to a chain multiplier of up to x3, and each link only counts for 30 seconds. Wind pushes the flames and rain slows them, cars explode and carry the fire down the street, and fire crews hose buildings down, which are rebuilt if they are put out in time. Witnesses and cameras raise your heat, which brings cops on foot, cruisers, roadblocks, SWAT and finally a helicopter; you are always sprinting, and can slide, double-jump, vault and climb ladders and fire escapes to reach the rooftops. Each city is generated from a seed, with a day and night cycle, and the three stages (Tinder Falls, Ember Bay and Ashford) unlock when you burn 75% of the previous city. It plays with keyboard and mouse, a gamepad or touch controls. The developer, todd_dillerson, says the code was written with AI coding assistants, Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5) and Cursor, while the developer set the design, made the calls and play-tested. Most of the sound and music is synthesized in code; the people model, fire and smoke flipbooks, gun sounds and fallback hand models are credited third-party assets under free or royalty-free licences. It was made for AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch), also entered in other jams, and is free to play in the browser on itch.io.

How it was built

Partially verified

The itch.io page, repeated in the jam submission, says: “Code: written with AI coding assistants: Claude Code (Anthropic: Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5) and Cursor. The developer set the design, made the calls and play-tested.” Most of the sound and music is synthesized live in the browser by code written with the same assistants, and the in-game text and the page were written with AI assistance and edited by the developer. The held flamethrower is a drawing generated with Grok (xAI) in Cursor and cleaned up by hand, and a fallback flamethrower model, normally not shown, was generated with Microsoft's TRELLIS. The sources do not say how the code was split between Claude Code and Cursor.

Supporting evidence
  • DeveloperJam submission, AI Tools Used: “Code: written with AI coding assistants: Claude Code (Anthropic: Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5) and Cursor. The developer set the design, made the calls and play-tested.” — itch.io (AI Browser Game Jam 5, hosted by Focaccai)
  • OfficialJam rules: development must be heavily AI-assisted, with the majority of the game AI-generated. — itch.io (Focaccai)
CursorSecondary

Named alongside Claude Code as an AI coding assistant that wrote the code; the held flamethrower drawing was also generated with Grok inside Cursor. Which model Cursor ran for the code is not stated.

Development approach

The developer set the design, made the decisions and play-tested, while Claude Code and Cursor wrote the code. Buildings, vehicles, props and effects are built in code, and most of the sound and music is synthesized in the browser by that code; the text was written with AI assistance and edited by the developer. Credited third-party assets: a people model by Quaternius (CC0), fire and smoke flipbooks from Unity Labs (CC0), gun and impact sounds from the Sonniss GDC bundles (royalty-free) and fallback hand models from W3C Immersive Web (MIT). The game uses three.js, Rapier physics and recast-navigation-js, built with Vite.

Verification notes: Gameplay, controls, credits and AI use from the developer's itch.io page (published 21 Oct 2026, 00:14 UTC; updated 27 Oct 2026, 00:11 UTC; status Released; HTML5; languages English; inputs keyboard, Xbox controller and smartphone) and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. Claude Code is recorded as primary because it is named first, with the models as the developer writes them; the sources give no split between it and Cursor and no code share, so no AI code share is recorded. The third-party assets are credited on the page under CC0, royalty-free and MIT licences, and the libraries under MIT, Apache 2.0 and zlib; no franchise or character is used, so no IP notice is recorded. The same itch.io page is also entered in Jamference: AI Game Jam Hack 2, One Game a Month #64, One Month - One Game #2 and Playtest & Feedback Exchange Jam #9. Jamference (16 to 23 Oct 2026, theme Crafting, restriction Playable on Mobile) has published results: #28 overall out of 37 entries (adjusted score 2.520, raw 2.722) from 6 ratings, with Use of AI (#27) the best placing. AI Browser Game Jam 5 voting was still in progress on 5 Nov 2026 (it ends on 7 Nov, 04:00 UTC), so no placement is recorded there; on 5 Nov its submission page showed 9 jam ratings (observed; jam votes, not players or reviews, so not recorded as a metric). The web build bundles three.js r170 (observed) with Rapier and Recast, and was checked for calls to AI services: none were found. Team size and location are not stated. itch.io shows no public rating and no download count. We did not play the game.
