About Last Flame: The Long Winter

A fast top-down spellcasting game in the browser. A hundred winters ago the Ice King froze the Great Hearth and the world with it; you are the last fire mage, carrying the Last Torch, and its heat is both your health and your magic, so every spell is a gamble. You burn your way through five regions (a frozen forest, a buried village, a mountain pass, the Ice King's halls and the heart of the mountain), each with its own guardian, using firebolts, fireballs, a nova and a dash, melting creatures sleeping in the ice and lighting old hearths to push the winter back. Each run builds differently from gifts of flame, duo combos, relics and pacts that cost you something, along a map of fights, elites, treasure, shrines, anvils and a merchant; unlocks carry over between runs, and a region you have reached can be the start of the next run. A full run takes about 15 minutes. It plays with keyboard and mouse, a gamepad, or twin-stick touch on a phone in landscape. The solo developer, JimmyJam Studio, made it in two weeks for AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch) and says Claude Code wrote all of the game code and also playtested and balanced it, while the developer directed, designed and playtested; the art, music and most sound effects were also made with AI tools. Free in the browser on itch.io, where it is listed as a prototype.

How it was built

Partially verified

The jam submission says Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5, with Claude Fable 5.1 for brainstorming and concepts) wrote all the game code, playtested it in a real browser through Chrome DevTools MCP, and balanced it with a human-like playtest bot. The itch.io page lists the systems it wrote (the combat, room generator, gifts and relics, every system) and says the bot played like a person at three skill levels over hundreds of runs. The developer directed, designed and playtested. Art was painted by Codex (OpenAI image generation, driven from the Codex CLI) and Nano Banana Pro from 3D pose guides made with Tripo and Blender; music came from ACE-Step 1.5 and most sound effects from Stable Audio Open, the rest being synthesized with ZzFX.

Supporting evidence
  • Developeritch.io page, How it was made: “Code: Claude (Anthropic), through Claude Code: the combat, room generator, gifts and relics, every system.” — itch.io
  • OfficialJam rules: development must be heavily AI-assisted, with the majority of the game AI-generated; AI may be used for anything. — itch.io (Focaccai)
Development approach

A solo project made in two weeks: the developer directed, designed, picked every asset and playtested, and Claude Code wrote the code, playtested in a real browser and balanced the game with a bot. Characters were turned into 3D models with Tripo, rigged and posed in Blender as pose guides, then every frame was repainted by Codex image generation and Nano Banana Pro and cut into 8-direction sprite sheets. Music was generated with ACE-Step 1.5 and most sound effects with Stable Audio Open, both run locally in ComfyUI, and picked by ear. The developer says they wanted to see how much could be done 100% with AI, and that sound effects and animation were the hardest parts to get right in two weeks.

Verification notes: Story, features, controls, run length and AI usage from the developer's itch.io page (published 29 Oct 2026, 16:19 UTC; status Prototype; HTML5) and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 4 Nov 2026. Models are quoted as the developer writes them. Team size 1 and the two-week development time rest on the developer's “I'm a solo developer” and “made in two weeks”; the credits read “Made by JimmyJam Studio (jimmyjamstudio.com)”. The 100% AI code share reflects the jam answer's “wrote all the game code”. The roguelike genre follows the itch.io Roguelite tag and the run structure; itch.io lists the genre as Action. The jam allows AI for anything and requires the majority of each game to be AI-generated; voting was still in progress on 4 Nov 2026 (it ends on 7 Nov), so no placement is recorded. On 4 Nov the submission page showed 5 jam ratings (observed; not recorded as a metric). The web build was checked for calls to AI services and none were found. itch.io shows no public rating and no download counts. We did not play the game.

Development history

  1. Published on itch.io (16:19 UTC) and submitted to AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch), about a day and a half before the deadline.

  2. AI Browser Game Jam 5 submissions close; the jam requires heavily AI-assisted games playable free in the browser. Voting was still in progress on 4 Nov 2026.
