About Kindlefall

Kindlefall is a free top-down 3D action roguelite that runs in a desktop browser, with no download or account. The First Flame fell from the sky and burned its way into the earth, and you play one of the Ember-born, descending ten floors it carved, from a burning library and a graveyard of knights to a clock built from bones, a drowned cathedral and the hearth where it began. Each hero has a role and their own combo, a dodge with invulnerability frames, a guard-breaking spell and healing flasks: the Ember Knight, Barbarian, Rogue, Pyromancer, the Hollow, who rises once per floor, and the Lancer. Rooms seal behind you; shrines between fights offer three of more than 270 boons and relics, every floor ends with a multi-phase boss, and there are mini bosses, secret duels behind cracked walls, puzzle rooms, mimics and a superboss. The enemy that kills you earns a name and comes back in a later run. Between runs, banked souls buy permanent upgrades at the Hearth, and there are a Daily Descent, Boss Rush, Guardians, the Gauntlet and New Game+ with Ascension, with five save slots. The developer describes it as Dark Souls meets Zelda meets Hades. Per the press kit, it was made with AI coding agents under the direction of solo developer Rudy Faile, who calls it one of the first games they have truly vibe-coded; the agents wrote the code, built the game's own 3D models and generated the music and sound in code, alongside CC0 model packs. It plays with keyboard and mouse or a controller.

How it was built

Partially verified

The press kit says: “Kindlefall was made with AI coding agents under Rudy Faile's direction. They wrote the code, built the game's own 3D models (the spiders and bosses among them, with CC0 model packs as inspiration), and generated the music and sound effects in code.” The 14-part devlog describes the loop: the developer played each build and wrote notes, and the AI turned them into changes, tested them with a bot that plays the game headless and shipped. During an overnight sprint the main AI session became an orchestrator owning the core files and the tests, with specialist sub-teams owning floors, NPCs, boons and heroes. No tool or model is named anywhere we read.

Supporting evidence
  • DeveloperDevlog part 1: “Most of the code was written by AI, directed and playtested by a person with an Xbox controller who said, often bluntly, what felt wrong.” — Kindlefall (Rudy Faile)
  • DeveloperThe developer on Hacker News: “It's also one of the first games I've ever truly "vibe-coded" - every other game i've made in the past has been the traditional way.” — Hacker News (djbiccboii)
Development approach

Per devlog part 1, three.js and ES modules with no build step for the game code, served by a small Python script; about 28,000 lines of JavaScript at that point. The art started from the CC0 KayKit packs (dungeon pieces, adventurers and skeletons), merged into single skinned meshes with a toon shader, bloom and a colour grade; later the agents built monsters with no kit model, and all 237 boon icons, in code. Every sound effect and piece of music is rendered offline by Python synthesis code, with a few CC0 Kenney recordings layered under it. A test bot clears every floor before each build ships.

Verification notes: The AI claim rests on the press kit (“made with AI coding agents under Rudy Faile's direction. They wrote the code…”), devlog part 1 (“Most of the code was written by AI”) and the developer's Show HN reply of 13 Oct 2026, all re-read on 4 Nov 2026. No tool or model is named in the press kit, the devlog index or any of the 14 devlog parts, so the tool is undisclosed. Developer name and solo status from the press kit's fact sheet; the link to the Hacker News account rests on the Show HN post linking kindlefall.com. Counts (10 floors, 6 heroes, 270+ boons and relics) are from the site and press kit for build .63 of 26 Oct 2026; the Show HN reply gave 7 floors, 5 heroes and 250 boons at the time. The play page loaded on 4 Nov 2026 (English); it loads the game module and a hosting SDK, and we did not scan every imported module, but no source mentions AI used during play. Devlog part 8 says a free demo followed by a paid game was the plan at the time; the site's FAQ now says the whole game is free and that the developer makes no money from it (donations are accepted). Nothing is listed on Steam. The Dark Souls, Zelda and Hades comparison is the developer's own. Location is not stated. The game was not played.
