About Spot Invaders

A free multiplayer action game for the browser in which your mouse cursor is your spaceship. The title screen gives the rules: avoid obstacles and other players, and click anywhere to start. Players share a room, a score and player count sit on screen, and an energy blast charges up over a few seconds. The entrant pitches it as a “Cursor action game with very high-quality graphics” and says vibe coding freed them to explore a new idea for rendering game graphics: the game draws its scenery from a looping pre-rendered video and, according to its code, uses a depth image packed into the same frames to work out collisions. It was made for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026, whose rules required at least 90% of each game's code to be written by AI; the official submission lists Cursor as the tool and says the custom engine is open source on GitHub. It finished 747th of 945 entries.

How it was built

Partially verified
CursorPrimary

In the official Vibe Jam 2026 submission the entrant lists Cursor as the tool and answers Yes to the AI-written field; the inspiration answer reads “Vibe coding makes a lot of hard stuff easier, freeing us to think at a higher level.” No devlog describes how Cursor was used, and the sources do not say how the background video was made.

Supporting evidence
Development approach

Built for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026 on a custom JavaScript engine with Cursor named as the tool. The client draws on a 2D canvas over a looping video (served in AV1, high- and low-quality versions); per the code, each frame carries a colour image and a depth image, and the depth is used to test collisions. Players are synchronised through a WebSocket room server.

Verification notes: Tool (Cursor), engine (“Custom JS engine (open-sourced at https://github.com/coeurnix/spot-invaders )”), genre (Action), pitch, inspiration and the multiplayer (Yes), mobile (Yes) and portal (Yes) flags from the entrant's answers in the official Vibe Jam 2026 games data (submitted 1 May 2026, 07:16 UTC; final rank 747 of 945 entries, no award), re-read on 5 Nov 2026; rule 3 on the jam page requires at least 90% AI-written code. The GitHub repository linked from the title screen could not be opened from our environment on 5 Nov 2026, so its contents and licence are not recorded and no GitHub listing is added. Developer: the title screen credits Coeurnix and the game is hosted on coeurnix.party; the entrant writes in the first person (“For me, that meant exploring a new idea…”). No real name, location or team size is recorded. The entrant answered Yes for mobile, and the client code moves the ship with touch (non-mouse) pointers as well as the mouse; the energy blast can only be charged with a mouse. The video and depth-based collisions are described from the game's client code; the game was not played. The client code was checked for calls to AI services and none were found. The release date is not stated; the jam submission is dated 1 May 2026.
