About Torched!

A short cooking game about a kitchen torch, set in Chez Flambeau, a tiny bistro in Paris. You are the new commis: Chef Odile Flambeau calls the orders and you hold the torch, sweeping it over each dish until the sugar turns gold rather than black, while Gaston Cendre, the most feared food critic in Paris, sits somewhere in the room with a notebook. Hold the mouse button or a finger to torch, keep the flame moving, and ring the bell or press Space to serve. Each of the four nights adds a dish and a twist: crème brûlées for guests who want their sugar darker or lighter, a side of salmon whose tail and belly cook faster than the back, a lemon meringue tart torched with a fine nozzle followed by a rush of three tickets at once, and a chocolate tart under squares of marshmallow that puff up, turn gold and catch fire if you linger. After each night Gaston's review appears as a newspaper clipping, read aloud by Gaston, with zero to three stars, and your tips are your score. An endless mode, Service continu, opens after Night 4 and ends when three tables walk out or get burnt; your five best evenings per night and eight stamps are kept in the browser. A night takes about three minutes. The itch.io page says the game is built by Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) as “chef de cuisine” (plan, architecture, assembly and checks), with separate agents for the sugar simulation, the service, the paintings and the sound, while the human, Erathul, does direction, decisions and playtesting; the images, voices, sound effects and music were made with ElevenLabs Creative. Free in the browser on itch.io, with mouse or touch; it was entered in AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch) and is listed as in development.

How it was built

Partially verified

The itch.io page says Torched! is built by Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) as “chef de cuisine”: plan, architecture, assembly and checks, with the human doing direction, decisions and playtesting. The rest of the work is split between agents, one per kitchen “station”: the Saucier (Opus 5.5) for the sugar simulation, the caramel shader, flame and smoke; the Maître (Sonnet 5.5) for the order rail, the nights, the HUD and the mouse and touch controls; the Pâtissier (Sonnet 5.5) for image prompts, generation, cut-outs and WebP; the Sommelier (Sonnet 5.5) for the sound; and Gaston (Opus 5.5), a critic agent that plays every milestone build in a real browser through Playwright without reading the code and writes an in-character review whose list of faults the other agents work through (seventeen visits at the time of the page). The credits give “Code, shaders, tests and text: Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5)”. The images, voices, sound effects and music came from ElevenLabs Creative, and a human picked sound and voice takes by ear because the agents cannot hear.

Development approach

Built for AI Browser Game Jam 5 in TypeScript on PixiJS 8 with Howler.js and Vite, and tested with Vitest and Playwright. Every dish is a grid of cells (96 × 96 for the sugar) simulated at a fixed 60 steps per second with a fixed seed, so that test bots (an attentive player who watches the colour, a “statue” that holds the flame still and a “waver” that flails at random) could tune it: per the page, an even sweep earns three stars on the brûlée, holding still burns a hole in 1.5 seconds and random waving never earns three stars. Those rules are part of 134 automated tests, plus 19 browser tests that play the game. The paintings were made with GPT Image 2.5 Flare, the voices with Eleven v4 text-to-speech, the sound effects with ElevenLabs SFX v2 and the instrumental music with Eleven Music v2.5, all through ElevenLabs Creative, with every file logged by agent, model, prompt and post-processing.

Verification notes: Gameplay, controls and AI use from the developer's itch.io page (published 27 Oct 2026, 10:00 UTC; updated 2 Nov 2026, 12:56 UTC; status In development; HTML5; genre Simulation; made with PixiJS) and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. Model names (Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5) are quoted as the page gives them. Same developer as Grab Your Torches! (itch.io account Erathul). The jam answer names Scenario.ai, but the itch.io credits list only ElevenLabs Creative (GPT Image 2.5 Flare) for the images; which tool made which image is not stated. The page credits the code to Claude Code but gives no share, so no AI code share is recorded. Team size is not recorded as a number: the page names one human, Erathul, for direction, decisions and playtesting. The English language field, the keyboard, mouse and touchscreen inputs, the subtitles setting and the itch.io rating of 5.0 (4 ratings) are from the itch.io page. The game's scripts make no calls to AI services; the images, voices and music were made before release. Submissions closed on 31 Oct 2026 and voting runs until 7 Nov 2026 (04:00 UTC), so no placement is recorded. On 5 Nov the submission page showed 19 jam ratings (observed; jam votes, not players or reviews, so not recorded as a metric). itch.io shows no download count. The game was not played.
