About VOLT NOMAD

An incremental boss rush in the browser, made in Godot for AI Browser Game Jam 4 on itch.io. You play a recovery automaton descending into an underground world engine: each manual command deals damage and generates CHARGE, which you spend across five gear trees (86 nodes) to evolve drones and automatic weapons, and you inherit the cores of the six machine beasts you defeat, in any order. Three hunts reach a quick normal ending; the rest, two abyssal bosses and a true ending are there for players who stay. There is no game over: the challenge is finding a build that outpaces the required damage. It supports mouse, keyboard, touch and gamepad, has full English and Japanese text, and a session takes about half an hour. The itch.io credits say the code, systems design, balancing and UX copy were done by OpenAI Codex in collaboration with Takahiro Saeki, who directed, playtested and made the final decisions; pixel art came from PixelLab, cinematic art from OpenAI image generation and music from Suno. It is free.

How it was built

Verified
CodexPrimary

The itch.io page's production disclosure says the game was made through an “AI-heavy, human-directed workflow”: code, systems design, balancing, UX copy and production support by OpenAI Codex in collaboration with Takahiro Saeki, who handled direction, playtesting, selection and final decisions. In a Zenn article the developer describes putting Codex into the whole production line rather than one-off code generation: Codex worked from Markdown specs with quality gates, implemented, ran tests and updated progress and decision logs, and a headless release audit played all 1,440 routes (any order of the six beasts, times two choices of boss) through to the end; the developer chose which of 92 PixelLab art candidates and which Suno tracks to keep by playing. The disclosure also says the loop included direct implementation changes, without saying how much code was written by hand. Other AI tools: PixelLab (pixel art), OpenAI image generation (cinematic art), Suno (music).

  • DeveloperOfficial jam entry: “AI Tools Used: OpenAI Codex, PixelLab, OpenAI Image Generation, Suno”. — itch.io
  • OfficialJam rule: development must be heavily AI-assisted, with the majority of the game AI-generated. — Focaccai (itch.io)

Development approach

Spec- and test-driven with Codex: three quality gates (30-second, 5-minute and 20-minute versions) written as Markdown completion criteria, game rules kept in a state model separate from the Godot UI so that simulations and a headless audit could play the campaign to the end, and store text, AI disclosure and release checklist kept in the repository. The developer playtested, judged feel and picked assets; the developer says 53 commits went in between 1 August and the release candidate.

Verification notes: AI use from the developer's own production disclosure on the itch.io page, the AI tools listed in the official AI Browser Game Jam 4 entry, and the developer's Zenn article of 9 Sep 2026, which links the itch.io page. The Zenn author (ヒロ, account hirodeath) links the GitHub account takahiro-saeki, matching the name in the itch.io credits. Jam rules and dates from the jam page (ran 1–18 Aug 2026; majority of the game must be AI-generated). The entry was submitted 7 days 12 hours before the deadline, which puts it at about 10 Aug 2026; itch.io shows no publish date, so the release date is left blank. Jam results (123 entries): #76 Overall, #38 Theme, #54 Graphics, #66 Audio, #80 AI Usage, #82 Fun, from 6 ratings. Team size is not stated: the credits name only Takahiro Saeki as a person, but music is credited to “Suno / neonlament” and it is not clear whether neonlament is another person. The production repository linked from the article (github.com/takahiro-saeki/game-jam-lab) could not be opened from our environment, so the game is not marked open source. No itch.io rating is shown on the game page.
