About A Tale of a Fish

A 3D voxel survival game in an endless ocean generated from a seed, so every dive is different. You are a fish: touch a smaller fish to eat it, run from bigger ones (markers show food in green, equals in yellow and danger in red), and dash, sprint and leap out of the water to dodge sharks or snatch insects above the waves, while watching your hearts, hunger and oxygen; staying still for a few seconds makes predators lose you. Seven mutations in two tiers each, among them wings, deep-sea shells, camouflage and gills, work like pieces of armour: you gather materials, craft at a workbench and kiln, and install them. The ocean holds Atlantean villages in a classical Greco-Roman style, where peaceful villagers trade with you and shelter fish while hunter camps want revenge, plus sacred fish, tameable companions, underwater volcanoes and geysers, seabirds, low-oxygen garbage patches and red tides, glaciers, storms and whirlpools, with day and night, chests and multiple saved worlds. The developer, Eperson Mayrink, says it was built entirely with Claude Code (Claude Sonnet 5.5) as a pair programmer: about 15,000 lines of Dart with more than 170 tests, a custom voxel renderer that runs on the CPU, and the port from desktop to the mobile web. The fish and villagers are hand-built behaviour code, not a language model. Made with Flutter for Jamference: AI Game Jam Hack 2 (theme: Crafting); free in the browser on itch.io, with touch controls on phones, and as a Windows download.

How it was built

Partially verified

The developer's jam answer: “Built entirely with Claude Code (Claude Sonnet 5.5) as a pair-programmer: about 15,000 lines of Dart, 170+ tests, a custom CPU voxel renderer, procedural Greco-Roman Atlantis, a 7-part mutation and crafting system and a full desktop-to-mobile-web port”. The answer adds that the agent reviewed its own screenshots and debugged the web port by comparing the output of the Dart VM and the JavaScript build. In the game, the fish and the Atlantean villagers are hand-built autonomous agents, not a runtime language model.

  • DeveloperThe itch.io page's AI disclosure ticks Code, Graphics, Sounds and Text; the page says the game is made with Flutter. — itch.io

Development approach

Per the developer's jam answer, the game was built entirely with Claude Code (Claude Sonnet 5.5) working as a pair programmer: about 15,000 lines of Dart with more than 170 tests, a custom voxel renderer that runs on the CPU (the page says it needs no dedicated GPU), the procedural world and the mutation and crafting system, and the port from desktop to the mobile web, which the agent debugged by comparing the Dart VM's output with the JavaScript build's. The fish and NPCs are hand-built behaviour code; no language model runs in the game. The page lists four original music tracks; who or what made them is not stated beyond the AI disclosure ticks.

Verification notes: Gameplay, features, controls and languages from the developer's itch.io page (published 20 Oct 2026, 16:54 UTC; status Prototype; HTML5 and Windows; genre Survival; AI disclosure ticks Code, Graphics, Sounds and Text); AI use and team from the answers on the official Jamference: AI Game Jam Hack 2 submission page; both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. The team list names only Eperson Mayrink, so team size is recorded as one. “Built entirely with Claude Code” is quoted as written; no code share is given, so none is recorded, and the model is given as the developer writes it. The answer says the scope “would be impossible for one person in a single day without AI”; the jam ran for a week and the answer does not say how long the game took, so no development time is recorded. Jamference (16 to 23 Oct 2026, theme Crafting, restriction Playable on Mobile; 37 entries) has published results: #15 overall (score 3.286) from 7 ratings, with Use of AI (#4) the best placing. The Flutter web build (main.dart.js) was checked for calls to AI services and none were found. itch.io shows no public rating and no download count. Location is not stated. We did not play the game.

Development history
