About Crumb Colony

Crumb Colony (蚂蚁搬画) is a free colour-sorting puzzle game played in the browser on a phone or computer, with no download or sign-up; it has also been released as a WeChat mini game. Each level is a pixel picture, mostly of food, built from coloured blocks. Tapping a colour box at the front of the tray sends it into one of five nest slots, and ants of that colour march out along the frame, eat the exposed blocks from the outside in and carry them back to the nest. Ants can only bite blocks on the edge or next to an emptied cell, so the puzzle is the order: a colour that cannot eat yet keeps its slot, and the level is lost when all five slots are full and stuck. Later chapters add linked boxes, locks with golden keys, ice, spider webs cleared by soldier ants, numbered big blocks, conveyor trays, gift wrapping, noodles and a dark Halloween night lit by jack-o'-lanterns. Boosters (an extra slot, taking a box from further back, a machine gun and a UFO) cost a star; a once-per-level rewind does not. There is a daily puzzle, progress is saved in the browser, and each level has a guide with a verified solution order. On 4 Nov 2026 the site's level list showed 340 levels in 17 chapters, while its introduction still said 240. The developer, joyce95 on V2EX, titled the launch post as made with Opus 5.5 and later said the levels are designed with AI, using Claude Code with several agents repeatedly checking playability and difficulty. The site is available in 16 languages.

How it was built

Partially verified

The developer's V2EX launch post is titled "用 Opus 5.5 搞了个网页小游戏「蚂蚁搬家」" (made a little web game with Opus 5.5). Later in the thread, asked whether the levels were designed by the developer or with AI, the developer answered "当然是 AI 啊!这个时代找不到古法编程了吧" (of course AI; you can't find old-fashioned programming these days), said they use the US$200 Claude Code plan, and said several agents repeatedly check each level's playability and difficulty. The developer also says they can only design about 20 levels a day. The thread does not say how much of the code AI wrote.

Development approach

Made with Opus 5.5 and Claude Code, per the developer, and extended in public: the developer added levels in batches of 20 for one player in the V2EX thread who kept finishing them, raised the difficulty after level 60, added a Halloween chapter and a rewind, and brought the game to WeChat. The site says every level is beaten by a program in the real game before it goes live, and publishes the verified solution order for each level.

Verification notes: AI use comes from the developer's V2EX launch post (28 Sep 2026, China time) and the developer's replies in the thread (30 Oct 2026). The site does not mention AI and does not name the developer; it is tied to joyce95 only through the V2EX post, whose only link is the site. Gameplay, mechanics, boosters, the rewind, the daily puzzle, the 16 languages and the level list come from the site on 4 Nov 2026. The web release date is the date of the launch post. The developer announced the WeChat mini game 蚂蚁搬画 on 22 Oct 2026 with a QR code hosted on the game's own domain; the site shows the same QR code under a "微信里也能玩" (also playable in WeChat) prompt and says WeChat keeps a separate save. We could not open the WeChat listing. Team size is not stated. The game was not played; nothing on the site describes AI-generated content during play.

Development history

  1. The developer posts the web game on V2EX.

  2. The developer adds 20 levels after a player in the thread finishes the first 20.

  3. The developer raises the difficulty of the levels after level 60.

  4. The developer says the game is live as the WeChat mini game 蚂蚁搬画.

  5. The developer adds 20 Halloween-themed levels and a rewind (时光倒流).
