About Gutterflame

Gutterflame is a step-by-step, first-person dungeon crawler where every step burns your torch: the light radius is how far you see, and when the flame dies the darkness strikes. From the guild town of Crossroads you pick a dungeon on the map and descend, first the Cinder Catacombs (10 floors), then the Drowned Temple (15 floors), where water puts out any open flame; six more dungeons are marked for higher guild ranks. Combat is turn-based, with blocking, weapons that each hit their own way and monsters with habits such as eating your light; a bestiary holds 101 monsters. Your backpack is a grid, so every cell is a choice between another torch and more loot. Between descents you take guild contracts, climb from rank F to A, cook, brew and reforge, and deeper camps let you rest and send money home by raven. The developer, ais235, says the code was written by Claude in Claude Code under human direction, and that the art was generated with OpenAI image generation through Codex. It was started in two days for AI Browser Game Jam 5 and grew after the jam; it is free in the browser on itch.io, with touch controls on phones, in English and Russian.

How it was built

Partially verified

The itch.io page says, in English and Russian, that the code was written by Claude (Anthropic) in Claude Code under human direction. The jam submission lists what that covers: the raycaster engine, procedural lighting and flame, combat, maze generation, UI, Web Audio sound, a balance bot and QA scripts. The dungeon, lighting, flame and hit effects are drawn in code, and the music is composed in code by a script that synthesizes the instruments. The human part is given as the idea, direction and playtesting.

Development approach

Started in two days for AI Browser Game Jam 5 (theme: Torch) and expanded after the jam. Claude Code wrote the game code in plain JavaScript under the developer's direction. Monsters, items, the guild hall and its people, camps, the world map, rank crests and icons were generated with OpenAI image generation through Codex. The music comes from a Python script that synthesizes strings, choir, music box, lute, flute and drums; the sound effects are procedural Web Audio, and the prologue narration is voiced with Google Gemini text-to-speech. Fonts: Press Start 2P and Nunito (SIL Open Font License).

Verification notes: AI use from the “About this project” section of the itch.io page and the AI Tools Used answer on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 4 Nov 2026; the 100% AI code share reflects the jam answer's “wrote all the game code”. Codex is described in the build text only, because the developer credits it with images, not code. Publication (29 Oct 2026, 06:43 UTC) and last update (31 Oct 2026, 02:55 UTC) from the itch.io page, whose URL uses the slug torchlit-depths. The page describes a “Diablo-style paper doll” for equipment; this is the developer's comparison, and no source shows Diablo names or assets in the game. The browser build contains English and Russian text and picks Russian for Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Kazakh browser languages. The mechanic tag roguelike follows the itch.io tags (Roguelite, Dungeon Crawler). The build's JavaScript makes no calls to AI services; the Gemini narration ships as audio files in the build (assets/audio/vo), so it is not generated during play. Team size is not stated. Jam voting was still open on 4 Nov 2026, so no placement is recorded; itch.io shows no public rating. The game was not played.
