About Hivebreaker

Hivebreaker is a free 2D twin-stick shooter set in space, for the browser and Windows; it can be played with mouse and keyboard, but a game controller is strongly recommended. It has an upgrade shop, several enemy and weapon types and end bosses. The developer, random-marsupial, calls it the result of a small experiment: with subscriptions to both OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude, the developer gave Claude Code access to the image generator included in the OpenAI subscription and a short prompt to make a twin-stick shooter, then asked for an upgrade shop, new enemies, more weapon types and various fixes, which the developer says were implemented quickly and mostly worked first time. Making it took just a few hours, the developer says, and since it was so easy to make, it will not be monetised. The first-version devlog calls it an experiment with no plans for updates and notes that it is a bit too easy, that the end bosses attack in much the same way and that the web version can struggle with frame rate, recommending the Windows download. Made with Godot; free on itch.io.

How it was built

Partially verified

The itch.io page opens by noting that Anthropic had recently released Opus 5.5 and that Claude Code has no built-in image generator, so it struggles a bit with 2D games: “However, I gave it access to the image generator that is included with my OpenAI subscription, and of course I had to test it, didn't I? So I gave it a short prompt to try to use the image generator to produce a twin stick shooter, and the result was remarkable!” The developer adds that it was not a one-shot generation: an upgrade shop, new enemies, more weapon types and various fixes were requested and implemented quickly. The page does not explicitly name the model used, and the OpenAI image generator is not named further.

Development approach

Per the developer, Claude Code built the game from a short prompt, using the image generator from the developer's OpenAI subscription for the art, and then implemented the requested upgrade shop, enemies, weapon types and fixes; the whole game took a few hours. Made with Godot, with an HTML5 build and a Windows build that runs without installation and stores its save in the Godot user-data folder.

“This is not actually a one-shot generation, though. I have asked for an upgrade shop, new enemies, more weapon types, and various fixes. And all was implemented quickly and worked pretty much in the first version.”

Verification notes: AI use, development time and controls from the developer's itch.io page (status Released; HTML5 and Windows; genres Action and Shooter; made with Godot; AI disclosure ticks AI Assisted, Code, Graphics, Sounds and Text) and the devlog “First version released” (26 Sep 2026, 11:13 UTC), both re-read on 6 Nov 2026. itch.io shows no publication date; the web and Windows builds were uploaded on 24 Sep 2026 (20:25 UTC), so no release date is recorded. The page mentions Opus 5.5 as Anthropic's then-new model in the context of the experiment but does not say outright that it ran Claude Code; it is quoted as context only. The developer writes in the first person and does not name anyone else, but states no team size. The Godot web build (index.pck) was checked for calls to AI services and none were found. itch.io shows no rating and no download count. Location is not stated. We did not play the game.

Development history

  1. The web and Windows builds are uploaded to itch.io (20:25 UTC).

  2. The developer announces the first version, calls it an experiment with no update plans and lists known issues (low difficulty, similar boss patterns, web frame rate).
