About Leviathan
A browser action game in which you play the whale. Rising out of the dark water, you ram rowboats, break harpoon lines, sink whaling ships and try to free a captive whale before the hunters regroup, while managing your air: surface to breathe, dive to drown the crews or shake off harpoons, and eat the fallen to heal. Waves grow from rowboats to heavily armed capital ships, and runs end on a score for an online leaderboard. The developer, Timothy Bauman, describes it as a mythic reverse Moby-Dick, inspired by the novel's image of a vast, unknowable whale and a doomed hunt in the fog. It was made for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026, whose rules required at least 90% of each game's code to be written by AI; the submission lists Codex as the tool. It finished 33rd of 945 entries. Free in desktop browsers; it needs a keyboard and a wide screen.
How it was built
VerifiedIn the official Vibe Jam 2026 submission the entrant lists Codex as the tool and answers Yes to the AI-written field. The public repository includes an AGENTS.md file with instructions for coding agents (for example, to read the art-direction notes before changing visuals), but no devlog describes how Codex was used or which model ran it.
- OfficialJam rule 3: at least 90% of the code has to be written by AI. — Vibe Jam (Pieter Levels)
Built for the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026 in TypeScript with Three.js and Vite, with Codex named as the tool; the code is public on GitHub. Per the repository's credit files, the music and sound effects are CC0 tracks from OpenGameArt plus one music track and two sound cues listed only as “user-provided”, whale calls are NOAA recordings, and one 3D model is a CC BY model from Sketchfab. The leaderboard runs on a Cloudflare Worker.

“I was inspired by the mythic imagery of Moby-Dick: a vast, unknowable whale, a doomed hunt, and fragile ships pushing into fog.”Verification notes: Tool (Codex), engine, genre, pitch, inspiration and the mobile and portal flags from the entrant's answers in the official Vibe Jam 2026 games data (submitted 28 Apr 2026; final rank 33 of 945 entries, no award); rule 3 on the jam page requires at least 90% AI-written code. Developer name from the portfolio timothybauman.com, which links the game and its repository; the X profile @baumant (display name Tim Bauman, location Granby, MA) links both the game and the portfolio. Team size is not stated. The repository github.com/baumant/leviathan is public, with TypeScript source, an AGENTS.md file, credit files for the audio and 3D model, and a latest commit dated 1 May 2026; it has no licence file, so it is not recorded as open source. Gameplay from the game's own on-screen text; on narrow screens or without a keyboard it asks you to open it on a wider screen with a keyboard. The game's code only talks to its own leaderboard and the jam widget; no calls to AI services were found. The jam page's widget counters showed 172 plays and 166 portal transfers on 3 Nov 2026 (observed; sessions, not players or downloads, so not recorded as metrics). The release date is not stated; the jam submission is dated 28 Apr 2026.
