About Nightshoal
Nightshoal is a single-player fishing and exploration game set in the 1920s around an uncharted archipelago. You sail one small boat out from harbour, set a course by clicking the water, and fish with a dial: keep the fish in the ring to climb toward rarer catches, or pull out early to keep the one you are after. The chart is blank parchment until you sail it, and the catch has to fit into a limited cargo hold before you sell it at the harbour and refit your boat. You take jobs from the harbour folk, answer boats in distress and keep a Captain's Log, while the weather changes and the sea gets more dangerous after dark, with rum-runners, pirates and sharks; per the developer, a cozy mode chosen when you create your captain leaves out the dangers at night and cannot be switched later. The developer describes RPG-like progression in which the boat is your character, with levels, talents, quests and six item slots of varying rarity. The developer calls the game an experiment in whether someone with no coding or game development experience can build a complete, playable game with AI. Per the itch.io AI disclosure, most of the code was written with Claude (currently Opus 5.5, in Claude Code) and other AI coding assistants in the Godot engine, the paintings, textures and portraits with OpenAI image models, many 3D models with Tripo and the sound and music with ElevenLabs, and nothing in the game is generated by AI while you play. It is in active development: a free demo (name your own price) of the first zone is on itch.io for Windows, macOS and Linux.
How it was built
Partially verifiedThe itch.io AI disclosure says: “Most of the code was written with Claude (currently Opus 5.5, in Claude Code) and other AI coding assistants, in the Godot engine.” The developer designs the game, decides what goes into it and checks everything before it goes out. In a post on r/ClaudeAI (2 Nov 2026, UTC) titled “Everything coded with Opus 5.5”, the developer describes building new zones in a loop with the /goal and /loop commands until a rough sketch matches a mockup image generated by ChatGPT, after which “everything is built with Opus 5.5”; a tool the developer calls Jev picks the effort level for each task. A decisions.md file tags every decision as [user] or [proposed] (AI), with the user's decisions taking priority. Opus also fixes some 3D models in Blender through MCP and makes some materials itself.
- DeveloperReddit post title (2 Nov 2026): “Been making this game for 3 months using only AI (Everything coded with Opus 5.5)”. — Reddit (u/RUSuper)
- DeveloperAI Tools Used, as the developer answered on the AI Browser Game Jam 5 entry page: “Claude Opus 4.8-5.5, Claude Fable 5 and 5.1, Codex Astra, OpenAI image generation, ElevenLabs, Jev (for deciding effort level)”. — itch.io
The itch.io disclosure says the code was written with Claude “and other AI coding assistants”. The developer's AI Browser Game Jam 5 entry lists “Codex Astra” among the AI tools used, and the Reddit cost breakdown includes an Astra plan at US$100; what Codex did is not described.
Per the developer's Reddit post, ChatGPT generates the mockup image of each new zone that the build is then brought closer to. The itch.io disclosure says the paintings, textures and portraits were made with OpenAI image models.
One developer with AI tools, per the first devlog. Per the itch.io disclosure, most of the code was written with Claude in Claude Code and other AI coding assistants in Godot; paintings, textures and portraits came from OpenAI image models, many 3D models from Tripo, sound effects and music from ElevenLabs, and the in-game text was written with AI and checked by the developer. The Reddit post adds that models are made in Blender or with TripoAI, sometimes from a single image showing all four sides of the object that Opus splits into four, and that the developer has been making the game for three months. The developer lists the total cost so far as around US$900–950: three months of Claude Max at US$200 a month (US$600), an Astra plan at US$100, ElevenLabs at US$11, TripoAI at US$40, US$80 of OpenAI API credits and about US$100 of other things.

“Most of the code was written with Claude (currently Opus 5.5, in Claude Code) and other AI coding assistants, in the Godot engine.”- Developer post on r/ClaudeAI (2 Nov 2026)
- “Nightshoal is on itch: first public build (Windows)” (itch.io devlog)
Verification notes: The AI claim rests on the developer-written AI disclosure on the itch.io page (read on 4 Nov 2026; it ticks AI Assisted, Code, Graphics, Sounds and Text) and on the developer's post on r/ClaudeAI by u/RUSuper (2 Nov 2026, 07:43 UTC), read from the Arctic Shift Reddit archive; the post links the itch.io page. The disclosure says “Nothing in the game is generated by AI while you play.” The cost list in the post includes US$80 of OpenAI API credits; the post does not say what they were used for, and the game files (about 720 MB per platform) were not downloaded, so the build could not be searched for AI service calls. Gameplay features come from the itch.io page, the first devlog (2 Oct 2026, 13:27 UTC) and the Reddit post; the progression, the six item slots and the cozy mode are described only in the post. The demo builds dated 4 Nov 2026 come from the devlog of that day. The developer entered the game in AI Browser Game Jam 5, whose host disqualified it (the entry page, read 4 Nov 2026, says the game is download-only and its itch.io page predates the jam; the developer agreed), and in Aristos Interactive Jam #9 (23–26 Oct 2026, 11 entries), whose results rank it #10 overall from 2 ratings. The Reddit post's “3 months” and its cost figures are the developer's own. The itch.io page showed no rating on 4 Nov 2026. Location is not stated. The game was not played.
