About Phase Break

Phase Break is a 2.5D arcade shoot-'em-up with a story about a fighter pilot returning home to fight for a colony that is already gone, a mystery that unfolds over six handcrafted missions, from the rings of the planet Veth past an ore plant and a space station to a dying sun. You keep every weapon you pick up and switch between them on the fly, and picking up the same weapon again raises its level. The Phase Break super weapon locks on to a target and tears it out of space; kills made while your guns run hot are worth double, and enemy fire is always red. The three bosses, the Warden, the Leviathan and the Architect, are fought in stages, and a story choice stays with your save. The game has live global leaderboards, no ads and seven original tracks from the developer's album The Buzz (as REKLAW). It plays with keyboard, controller or touch on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The developer, Peter Walker (pedrohead on itch.io), says it is the end of a 20-year attempt to make this game, a horizontal shooter with "R-Type's dread", and that it was finished with Claude used alongside Godot: AI wrote code and some of the art, while the music, the story, the level design and the feel of every mechanic are the developer's. It costs US$1.99 on itch.io, and a free demo covers the first two missions.

How it was built

Partially verified
ClaudePrimary

The itch.io page says the music and the story had been building for two decades and that the tools finally caught up (Godot + Claude): AI wrote code and some of the art alongside the developer, while the music, the story, the level design and the feel of every mechanic are the developer's. In a dev.to post the developer adds: “I used Claude with Godot. It wrote code and some of the art. I directed it, and the design, the story and the music are mine.” The itch.io AI disclosure ticks AI Assisted, Code and Graphics. No Claude product or model is named, and the sources do not say how much of the code AI wrote.

Supporting evidence
  • Developerdev.to post (28 Oct 2026): “This year I built it with an AI pair programmer … I used Claude with Godot. It wrote code and some of the art.” — dev.to (Peter Walker)
  • Developeritch.io devlog (28 Jul 2026): made solo in Godot, “with an AI pair programmer doing the code and some of the art alongside me”. — itch.io (pedrohead)
Development approach

Solo development in Godot with Claude as an AI pair programmer, per the developer: the AI wrote code and some of the art under the developer's direction, while the design, level design, story and music are the developer's own. The soundtrack comes from the developer's album The Buzz, released as REKLAW and sold separately on itch.io. Version 2.0.0 (15 Oct 2026) reworked the missions and scoring, so every leaderboard was reset; the developer plans further updates and a level design toolkit for the community.

Verification notes: AI use from the itch.io page, the developer's “Phase Break is LIVE!” devlog (28 Jul 2026) and dev.to post (28 Oct 2026), which links the itch.io page. Price, sale, files (version 2.0.0) and the demo from the itch.io page and its public data on 4 Nov 2026; the itch.io rating of 5.0 rests on 2 ratings. itch.io shows no publication date. The earliest devlog, titled “Phase Break is LIVE!” (28 Jul 2026, 22:16 UTC), announces the free demo and a macOS build, so the game was public by then; the exact release date is not recorded. Later devlogs: 1.0.2 (4 Aug 2026), 2.0.0 (15 Oct 2026) and a post on the music and the Halloween sale (28 Oct 2026). The itch.io page says the tools caught up “last year”, while the dev.to post and the July devlog say the game was built or finished this year (see conflicts). The comparison with R-Type is the developer's description of the mood; no source mentions R-Type names or assets in the game. Team size 1 from the devlog (“Solo, in Godot”) and the dev.to post (“I'm a solo developer”); the location is from the dev.to profile. The leaderboards are an online service; nothing in the sources describes AI used during play. The game was not played.
