About Sprout Quest

A cute, mobile-first adventure game in the browser, best played on a phone held upright. You wake in a glade, pick up a twig sword and reach the village of Sowerby, where Elder Oswin sends you through a chain of chapters: smoke from Ember Peak has made the monsters grumpy, and guardians block the roads east. Monsters wander the tall grass and touching one starts a real-time arena battle with attacks, dodges, weapon skills and potions. You level up, chop trees and mine rocks in short timing minigames to climb the material tiers, craft weapons, armour, charms and potions at the Forge, and rebuild the village, from a tent to a manor. Guardian bosses (the Slime King, the Alpha Woolf and the Crystal King) open each road, and the last fight is the dragon Emberwyrm; there are four weapon classes, and side stories such as Poppy's Bunny. The README says the game was built entirely by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code from plain-language requests, starting on the model's release day (22 September 2026), with no code or art written by hand; the first playable version took about four and a half hours and eleven prompts. Characters and monsters are cel-shaded 3D models made with Blender scripts, and the music is written as code and played with public-domain orchestra samples. Free; progress saves in the browser, and the source is public on GitHub.

How it was built

Partially verified

The README says Sprout Quest “has been built entirely by Claude Opus 5.5”, starting on the model's release day: the game code, the Blender art pipeline and every 3D model, the tests, CI and the repository were written by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code from plain-language requests, while a human plays it on a phone and gives feedback between turns, and no code or art was written by hand. Measured from the Claude Code session log, the first version took 11 prompts (plus three to set up GitHub), about 4 hours 25 minutes, about 230 model calls and about 565,000 output tokens. Since then, play reports exported from the game have been handed back to the model to tune the balance.

Development approach

Built in TypeScript on Three.js with Bun, from plain-language prompts such as “make a cute mobile adventure game with a fight → level → craft loop” and “install Blender and make cute 3D art”, per the README. Characters, monsters and weapons are cel-shaded 3D models built by Blender Python scripts; trees and ore rocks are 2D vector paths, other scenery is rendered sprite atlases, and sounds and the map are generated in code. The music is written as code and played with recordings from VSCO 2 Community Edition (public domain). Work happens on a dev branch; pull requests into main must pass typecheck, tests, balance contracts and browser tests, and each release adds in-game patch notes. The human's role is playing on a phone and describing what feels off.

Verification notes: AI use, prompt and session figures, story, areas, bosses, weapons, crafting, the art and music pipeline and the release process from the repository README; TypeScript, Three.js, Bun and the current version (0.3.12) from package.json (both read through raw.githubusercontent.com, main branch, on 4 Nov 2026). No LICENSE file was found, and the repository's stars and commit history could not be read from our session. The release date is the README's date for version 0.1.0, built and published in one Claude Code conversation on 22 Sep 2026 (“from first prompt to published repo”); one of the eleven prompts asked for a link to play it. The play page is a GitHub Pages build with an English interface. The developer is known only as the GitHub account aibengineering; no name, location or team size is given. Dev-only save slots, presets and an autoplay controller described in the README are compiled out of the published build and are not described as features. No source mentions generative AI running during play.

Development history

  1. Version 0.1.0 built and published in a single Claude Code conversation (11 prompts, about 4 hours 25 minutes), per the README.
