About MOODDEBT

A short, one-button satire of social media built as an anti-slot machine: you spin to unlock secrets and compete on an online leaderboard for the lowest score rather than the highest. The developer, healeyj, lists the books Stolen Focus, Hooked and Evil by Design and the games Balatro, Luck Be A Landlord and Cloverpit as inspirations, and asks players for their thoughts on its themes. Sessions last a few minutes, and the page lists subtitles, a high-contrast mode and an interactive tutorial. The developer says the design document came first: the developer developed the concepts and wrote the text, and Claude built the codebase (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python and AWS) one feature at a time. Free in the browser on itch.io; it was entered in AI Browser Game Jam 5.

How it was built

Partially verified

The jam answer names Claude Code. The itch.io page's Development Process section: “Design doc first, codebase second. I developed the concepts, Claude built the codebase with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, and AWS.” The work ran in Claude Sonnet conversations, one feature at a time; the developer also tried Claude Opus as a manager coordinating several Sonnet feature developers, which “worked but burned tokens too quickly”. The developer wrote the text with minimal AI edits, playtested and wrote bug reports for Claude to resolve, and later automated that with Playwright.

Development approach

Design document first, then code, per the itch.io page: the developer developed the concepts and Claude built the codebase with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python and AWS, one feature at a time, with an experiment in which Claude Opus coordinated several Claude Sonnet feature developers. The developer wrote the text, playtested and filed bug reports for Claude, and later automated the playtesting with Playwright. Spins, scores and the leaderboard run through an AWS API endpoint (observed).

Verification notes: AI use from the Development Process section of the itch.io page and the AI Tools Used answer (“Claude Code”) on the official AI Browser Game Jam 5 submission page, both re-read on 5 Nov 2026. The itch.io page speaks of Claude Sonnet conversations and names no coding tool; the jam answer names Claude Code, which is recorded. Neither gives an AI share, so none is recorded. The itch.io AI disclosure ticks Code and Graphics. The page describes the game as an anti-slot machine; it involves no real money as far as the page shows, and no content warning is given. Team size is not stated. The page also lists the game as a submission to Playtest & Feedback Exchange Jam #9. Publication (31 Oct 2026, 02:40 UTC; the page was updated on 31 Oct 2026, 21:59 UTC, after submissions closed), the English language field, the session length and the accessibility features from the itch.io page; the itch.io page lists no genre. The client build calls an AWS API endpoint for spins, scores and the leaderboard (the server returns each spin's symbols and payouts; no AI model is involved as far as the client shows) and references healeyj.com/mooddebt for its share image; it makes no calls to AI services (checked 5 Nov 2026). The healeyj.com copy was not checked and is not listed. Jam voting was still open on 5 Nov 2026, so no placement is recorded; itch.io shows no public rating. The game was not played.
