About Roach Survivor

Roach Survivor (卵鞘危机, roughly "egg-case crisis") is a top-down survivors-style roguelite set in a sewer. You play a cute cockroach, with unlockable skins, and keep moving, aiming and levelling up through swarms of mutant roaches: kill enemies to collect experience, pick a buff or a relic at each level-up, and beat the boss waves before the timer runs out. Clearing a run or beating a boss earns golden oothecae (egg cases) that buy permanent upgrades and skins between runs. The V1.0 release (26 Apr 2026) had three difficulties, three boss waves (the full three-phase fight on hard), 12 in-run buffs whose pool can be customised before a run, relics, permanent upgrades and achievements; the current README adds an endless mode with a boss wave every two minutes, eight permanent upgrades, a bestiary, a relic codex and a skin lab. It is played with WASD or the arrow keys and the mouse; on phones auto-aim switches on, though the developers recommend a computer. It plays free in the browser (on Vercel, with a Cloudflare Pages mirror) and can also be run from a Docker image or installed as an Electron desktop app from GitHub Releases. The developers, Moeary on GitHub, say they made it together with AI, thanking Claude Code, Codex and Copilot, and that most of their own time went into game design and testing. The source code is on GitHub under the MIT licence. The interface is in Chinese.

How it was built

Partially verified

In the V1.0 announcement on V2EX (Chinese), the developers say they made the game together with AI, thanking Claude Code, Codex and Copilot, and that most of their own time actually went into game design and testing (adding that the AI is just too authoritative, "AI 大爹还是太权威了"). They do not say which tool wrote which part or how much of the code AI wrote. In a reply, the developer says Claude Code and Codex agents were also used for sound: asked to open a subagent and look for free sound-effect sites, the agent found Mixkit and wrote a script to download the effects itself.

Supporting evidence
  • ObservedTwo commits by the second contributor, RozenScarlet (17 Apr 2026: auto-aim and ranged enemies; 19 Apr 2026: status effects, combat stats and the relic system), carry Co-Authored-By trailers for Claude Opus 4.7 and Claude Opus 4.6. — GitHub

Named in the same credit. In a reply the developer says that, besides the sound-effect search, Codex was later used with GPT Image 2 to draw PNG images used as skins for some characters.

Supporting evidence
  • ObservedA merge commit on 20 Apr 2026 merges into a branch named codex/resolve-pr10. — GitHub

Named in the same credit line (感谢 Copilot); the post does not say what it did.

Supporting evidence
  • ObservedTwo commits by Moeary (26 Apr 2026: the rename to Roach Survivor; 27 Apr 2026: version 1.1.0 with endless mode) carry Co-authored-by: Copilot trailers. — GitHub
Development approach

Built with AI coding agents while the developers concentrated on design and testing, per the V2EX post. The public git history runs from 9 Apr 2026 (a commit titled "First Update V0.2") to 27 Apr 2026: 42 commits (41 from two human contributors and one from a Cloudflare bot) and tags v0.8.0 to v1.1.0. The game uses React 19, TypeScript and Vite, is packaged with Electron and is deployed to Vercel and Cloudflare. Per the developer's reply: the background music was made by a person with MiniMax's music model; sound effects were downloaded from Mixkit by a script an agent wrote; most visuals are simple CSS plus SVG vector images, made by giving a reference picture and a request to a multimodal AI such as Gemini 3.1 Pro, and some character skins are PNGs drawn with GPT Image 2 through Codex.

Verification notes: AI use and the asset workflow come from the developers' V1.0 announcement on V2EX (26 Apr 2026, China time) and the developer's reply the same day. The post speaks for "we" (我们) and the repository history shows two contributors (Moeary and RozenScarlet), but no source gives the team size. Features and controls come from the post and the repository README; the tech stack and version 1.1.0 from package.json; commits, AI co-author trailers, tags and the MIT licence from the repository (cloned 4 Nov 2026). The README does not mention AI. The GitHub web page could not be loaded from our environment, so stars and release download counts were not read, and no release date is recorded because earlier versions may have been public before V1.0. The live web build's interface is in Chinese. The background music and some skins are AI-generated (MiniMax, GPT Image 2), per the developer; the licence terms of the downloaded Mixkit sound effects are not stated in the repository. The game was not played; no calls to AI services were found in the web build.
